Mobile data in Zakopane and the Polish Tatras

Two different questions in one place

Zakopane is Poland's main mountain resort, at the foot of the High Tatras, and it splits neatly into a town problem and a mountain problem.

The town is not a problem. Connectivity in Zakopane is good, and the Krupówki promenade — the main pedestrian street — has the best of it. Cafés, guesthouses, ticket offices: none of this will trouble your phone.

The mountains are where it stops, and it stops in a way that is worth knowing precisely.

Where the signal actually ends

The Kasprowy Wierch cable car goes up to 1,987 m, and coverage at the summit cable car station is reasonable — good enough for a message and a photo upload. Step onto the ridge trails beyond the station and it starts dropping.

On the hiking routes toward Rysy, Poland's highest peak at 2,499 m, signal goes above approximately 1,800 m. That is not a provider difference or a plan you have chosen badly. It is altitude, terrain and the fact that there are no masts up there.

What follows from it is simple and boring, which is why people skip it: download everything before you start walking. Offline maps of your specific route, your trail app — AllTrails is the common choice here — and anything you would want to read at a junction. A phone that needs a connection to tell you where you are is not a navigation tool in the Tatras.

Emergencies are a call, not an app

The Tatra mountain rescue service, TOPR, covers the range. In an emergency you reach them by calling the local emergency number by voice, not through a data app or a messaging thread.

That is worth internalising because it inverts the usual habit. A voice call gets through in conditions where a data session will not, and emergency calls are the last thing to fail on a weak signal. Have the number in your phone rather than assuming you will look it up.

Buying in town

If you want a Polish SIM once you are here, Krupówki has an Orange partner shop, which is the straightforward option in Zakopane. Bring your passport — registration requires ID everywhere in Poland. A local SIM runs about $8 nationally.

Most people should sort this out before arriving. Zakopane is a two-hour-plus drive south of Kraków, so it is not a place to arrive needing to solve a connectivity problem; if you install a travel eSIM before you fly, it is already running when you land.

EU and EEA visitors should not buy anything at all. Poland is in the EU and your home SIM roams at domestic rates, in the Tatras exactly as in Kraków — which is to say it works in town and stops on the ridge, like everyone else's.

What plans cost

A hiking week in the Tatras is a light data week by accident: you spend the days above the treeline where nothing loads, and the evenings on guesthouse wifi. Three to five gigabytes is usually generous. For a week in Zakopane, you are not.

One caution about choosing on coverage.
