Above ground, nothing to worry about

Warsaw was destroyed in the war and rebuilt, and what stands now is a modern city wearing a reconstructed old town. There is no medieval street plan working against your signal here. The Royal Castle and Old Town, POLIN, and the Praga district across the Vistula all behave like any European capital: you have a connection, and it works.

The qualifier is underground. Coverage in the Metro Line 1 tunnel sections has been improving rather than being finished, so expect it to come and go between stations. Load your route before you go down the escalator, not after the doors close.

A city where the phone is the ticket

Warsaw leans on apps more than the size of the city suggests, and that changes how much data headroom you want.

• ZTM handles public transport tickets.
• Jakdojade is what people use for complicated routing across tram, bus and metro.
• Bolt and Uber both operate for rideshare.

None of these is heavy on data individually. Together, over four or five days, with maps running and tickets being bought on platforms, they add up to more than the 1 GB plans comfortably cover — particularly if the app you need is the one refreshing on a metro platform where the signal is thin.

We would not buy the smallest plan for Warsaw. The step up costs a couple of dollars and removes the problem.

Where to buy, and where not to

Chopin Airport has Relay stores, but the SIM selection there is limited. It is the weakest of the options rather than a disaster — you can end up with whatever they happen to stock rather than what suits your trip.

Better, if you want a Polish SIM: buy at an Orange, Play or T-Mobile store in the city centre, where the range is complete and staff sell these every day. Bring your passport, since registration requires ID. A Polish local SIM is around $8, which is genuinely cheap by European standards.

Best, if your handset supports it: install a travel eSIM before you fly. It is working when you land, there is no counter and no ID step, and it starts below the price of the physical SIM.

And if you are arriving from another EU or EEA country, buy nothing at all. Poland is in the EU and your home plan roams at domestic rates — no app, no counter, no queue.

What the plans cost

For a Warsaw city break with transit apps running, 5 GB is the honest recommendation — $8.00 verified, over 15 days, with room for the routing app and a few evenings of video.

Poland's plan ladder keeps going well past that. The 20 GB plan at $18 is $0.90 a gigabyte and the 50 GB at $35 is $0.70, the cheapest per-gigabyte rate we hold for the country. Neither is a city-break purchase, but if Warsaw is one stop in a month around Poland, they are better value than stacking small plans.

On host networks we hold less than we would like. Airalo publishes none for Poland; the "Lekko" name on its plans is Airalo's own retail label rather than an operator. Saily and Nomad publish none either; and neither does Holafly — the Orange, T-Mobile and Play listing this page used to credit to it came from our own data rather than from the seller. In Warsaw this is close to academic — the capital is well served by every Polish operator — but it means no recommendation on this page rests on which network a plan uses.
