Shops in arrivals, not operator counters

Our record for Kraków describes SIMs from Orange and T-Mobile as available in arrivals via shops rather than dedicated carrier desks, and calls the selection limited. That distinction matters more than it sounds. A shop assistant selling SIMs alongside everything else is not going to talk you through tariff options or fix an activation problem; you get the pack that is on the shelf.

The wait is eight minutes at peak and three off-peak — short, and shorter than the Croatian coastal airports. A passport is required to register a Polish prepaid SIM, which is national law rather than a KRK rule. Free wi-fi runs through the terminal.

Poland is in the EU, which settles it for most arrivals

Kraków takes an enormous amount of intra-European traffic, much of it on low-cost carriers from other EU countries. If your phone is on a home plan from any EU or EEA country, you roam in Poland at your domestic rates. Buy nothing. Turn data roaming on and get on the train into town.

That covers most of the people who land at KRK. The pages that tell every arriving traveller to buy something are simply wrong about Poland, and the eight-minute queue is eight minutes many of them are spending for no reason at all.

If you do need to buy, Poland is cheap on both sides

A Polish local SIM runs about $8 from an airport seller — the cheapest local-SIM entry point of any market in this part of Europe, and well under half what a Norwegian one costs. If you want a physical card and you have your passport, that is a fair purchase and we are not going to talk you out of it.

The installed-before-you-fly option is cheap too:

Poland does not stop at 20 GB, and the largest plan is the cheapest per gigabyte: $35 for 50 GB over 30 days is $0.70 a gigabyte, verified on Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. It is also one of the better-priced markets in the middle of the ladder — 20 GB for 15 days at $18 is $0.90 a gigabyte, well under what the same size costs in Croatia or Finland.

For a long weekend in Kraków, 5 GB at $7.50 is the sensible size and the whole question is worth about ten dollars.

When the shop in arrivals is the right call

Three cases. A handset that cannot take an eSIM, and you want data before you reach the city. A dead or unrecognised travel eSIM that needs replacing now. Or a stay long enough that a Polish number itself is useful — for local deliveries, taxi apps and bookings that want a domestic mobile.

Otherwise install before you fly. The advantage is not price at KRK, it is that the connection is live when the aircraft doors open rather than after a queue and a passport scan.
