There is no SIM shop at Chopin

The useful thing to know before you land at Warsaw Chopin is that the airport has no dedicated SIM counter and no operator-run store in arrivals. What it has is general retail — Relay newsstands and convenience shops — carrying a limited selection of prepaid SIMs, and no eSIMs at all.

That changes the shape of this decision. At airports with a carrier kiosk you are weighing a convenience premium against a queue. Here you are weighing whether a newsagent happens to have the SIM you want in stock, sold by staff whose main job is coffee and magazines.

We do not hold terminal-level detail for which units sell SIMs, nor their opening hours. If you land late, do not build your evening around finding one open.

Queues and the passport rule

Reported waits are about 10 minutes at peak and roughly 3 minutes off-peak. By airport standards that is quick, and it is not the reason to skip the purchase.

The friction is registration. Poland requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, so buying one is a documented transaction rather than a grab-and-go. That is a legal requirement, not a shop policy, and it applies in city stores too.

Free wi-fi is generally available across the terminal, which is enough to get an eSIM activated, order a ride, or check a train time before you leave the building.

If you are arriving from the EU, buy nothing

Poland is in the EU. If your everyday SIM is from any EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home applies and your normal allowance works in Poland at your normal price. Nothing on this page applies to you. Check your operator's fair-use data cap for roaming and then stop reading.

This rules out a large share of arrivals at Chopin, which is worth saying plainly on a page whose whole subject is what to buy.

What the alternatives actually cost

A Polish prepaid SIM runs around $8 at airport prices — which, unusually, is not a rip-off. Poland is a cheap prepaid market, and the local SIM is genuinely competitive with the small eSIM plans. The problem at WAW is availability, not price.

Read the bottom of that table before the top. Fifty gigabytes for $35 with 30 days of validity works out at $0.70 per gigabyte — the cheapest data on the list by a wide margin, and cheaper per gigabyte than anything a newsstand is likely to be holding. The 1GB plans look cheap and are the worst value on the page at around $4 a gigabyte. If you are staying more than a few days, the large plan is the one to buy.

Which network you end up on

No seller lists Polish operators. The Orange, T-Mobile and Play trio this page used to credit to Holafly's listing came from our own data rather than from Holafly, so do not choose a plan on that basis. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly do not publish a host network for Poland at all — its Polish product is sold under the name Lekko, which is a retail label rather than a carrier.

If network choice genuinely matters to you — a rural stay, a work trip that cannot drop — a physical SIM from a Polish operator is the only route where you know for certain whose towers you are on. Orange Polska, Play, T-Mobile Poland and Plus all sell prepaid in city stores.

The verdict

Install an eSIM before you fly. It provisions on your home wi-fi, needs no passport scan at purchase, and is live by the time you reach baggage reclaim. Chopin's retail simply does not offer a better option.
