Mobile data in Kraków, and on the day trip that needs it most

The city itself asks nothing of you

Kraków is Poland's most-visited city and it is well covered. The Main Market Square, Wawel Castle and the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter all have good connectivity throughout — there is no medieval dead zone, no hill that cuts you off, nothing to route around. If you are staying inside the city, any plan with enough gigabytes will do, and which provider you choose makes no practical difference.

That is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. The interesting part of Kraków connectivity is not Kraków.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: the trip that needs planning

The memorial at Oświęcim is 75 km west, roughly 90 minutes each way, and it is the most-visited Second World War memorial in Europe. Entry is by timed ticket, booked online in advance. That combination — a fixed slot, a long journey, a busy site — is where people get caught.

Two practical rules:

Book before you travel, not on the day. Slots go, particularly in summer, and discovering that on the coach is too late to fix.

Download the ticket confirmation before you leave Kraków. The site itself has 4G coverage throughout, so this is not about signal at the gate; it is about not depending on a live connection and a working phone at the exact moment you are asked for a booking reference, after a 90-minute journey, in a queue.

This is also a long day with the phone out — travel time, the memorial, travel back. If you are on a small plan, it is the day that will eat it.

Buying here, and why Poland is different

Poland is one of the cheaper markets in Europe on both sides of the comparison. A local SIM runs about $8 at an airport counter, and Kraków Airport has Orange and T-Mobile options in arrivals with shorter queues than Warsaw's. Registration requires a passport or ID, as it does everywhere in Poland.

That makes buying on arrival more defensible in Kraków than in most cities we cover. The counter price is close to the cheapest eSIM, the wait is short, and you get a Polish number out of it.

The case for an eSIM instead is that it is already working when you land, needs no ID step, and costs less at the small end. Both are reasonable. If your handset is not eSIM-capable the question does not arise — check eSIM compatible phones if you are unsure.

EU and EEA travellers should do neither. Poland is in the EU and your home SIM roams at domestic rates.

The prices

Poland's ladder does not stop in the middle. It runs to a verified 50 GB for 30 days at $35, which is $0.70 a gigabyte — the best rate we hold for the country, and less than a fifth of what the 1 GB tier costs per gigabyte. For a city break, 3 GB or 5 GB is the sensible bracket and the rate is irrelevant. For anything longer than a fortnight, or for several people sharing one hotspot, look at the top of the table rather than the bottom.

Unlimited plans run from Airalo's verified $11.50 for three days to $69 for thirty; Holafly's unlimited plans start at an indicative $19 for five days. A Kraków weekend with an Auschwitz day trip does not need either.

On networks, what we can and cannot say

Orange Polska, Play, T-Mobile Poland and Plus are the Polish operators, and the first and third of those are what the airport counters sell.
