Turku — 55 Mbps in the old capital, nothing on the outer islands

Two different places, one page

Turku is two connectivity problems wearing the same name. The city — Finland's capital until 1812, and still a compact, walkable one — has full 4G and 5G, averaging around 55 Mbps and 110 Mbps respectively. Finland as a whole reached 100% 4G coverage and 99.5% 5G population coverage in 2024. In the city there is nothing to plan around.

The Turku Archipelago is the other problem. It is one of Europe's largest island groups, with more than 50,000 islands, most of them uninhabited. Coverage drops on the outer islands and ferry routes between them can lose signal entirely. If your trip involves island-hopping, offline maps are not a nice-to-have.

Check your own contract before you buy anything

Finland is in the EU. An EU or EEA contract roams here on your domestic allowance, and the correct spend for most European visitors to Turku is zero. Finland is also not a cheap eSIM market by regional standards — a verified Airalo 10GB month here is $15.50, where the same package in Austria is $11 — so it is worth two minutes to check before assuming you need to buy.

Which network, and why it matters more on the water

Elisa is the largest Finnish network, at roughly 45% market share, and has the best measured coverage experience in the country, scoring 7.6 out of 10 with Opensignal along with the widest rural reach. DNA is strong on 5G speed. Telia is a sound second choice. In Turku city, Elisa or DNA are both good and the distinction is academic.

Out in the archipelago it stops being academic — and this is where travel eSIMs get vague. Airalo sells its Finland package under its own product name, Finn Communications, and does not publish which Finnish network sits behind it; we hold no verified host carrier for it either way. Holafly is no better: its own pages name no Finnish network either, and the Elisa, DNA and Telia trio this page used to credit to it came from our own data rather than from the seller. If your itinerary is genuinely archipelago-heavy and you want Elisa's rural reach specifically, the only way to be certain of it is a local Elisa prepaid SIM.

Buying locally: the kiosk, not a phone shop

Finnish prepaid SIMs are sold at R-kioski, both in Turku city and at Turku Airport (TKU) arrivals. That is the normal route — you do not need to find a carrier store. A passport or ID is required for registration, and airport prices run around $12.

Given that an eSIM can be installed before you land and a verified 3GB seven-day plan is $6.50, the kiosk is worth using mainly if your phone will not take an eSIM at all.

What a Turku trip costs

Verified prices were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. Saily's Finland plans — 1GB for seven days at $3.99, 3GB for thirty days at $6.99 — were read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. This page previously gave the 3GB as $8.99, two dollars above what Saily charges.

One word on unlimited plans: they buy you the least here of anywhere. The city has fast coverage you will barely dent, and the archipelago has no coverage for unlimited data to flow through. A metered plan fits a Turku trip better than an uncapped one.

Planning the island days

Save your Google Maps area offline before you leave the mainland, along with ferry timetables and any booking confirmations. The Turku Music Festival in August falls inside the May-to-September window when most visitors come; we have no record of it affecting the network, and the city has capacity to spare.
