A small town with a very big July

Savonlinna is a modest lakeside town for eleven months of the year and one of Europe's serious opera destinations for the twelfth. The festival runs from early to late July in the courtyard of a medieval water castle, and it brings a volume of visitors the town is not otherwise built for.

That has a connectivity consequence worth planning around: network congestion during performance evenings. Several thousand people in one place, all messaging and photographing at the same intervals, on infrastructure sized for a small town. It is not a failure, but it is the one time of year when "good 4G" does not feel like it.

Practical version: book accommodation and opera tickets through an app months ahead rather than trying to sort anything out on the night, and download your tickets rather than relying on loading them at the gate.

Coverage on and around the water

4G in the town itself is good, averaging around 40 Mbps. That is the lowest figure we hold for any Finnish destination, against a national average of about 58 Mbps — though Finland reached 100% 4G population coverage and 99.5% 5G by mid-2024, so "lowest in Finland" is still a working connection.

On Lake Saimaa it becomes variable. The main channels are fine, which covers the lake cruises and the approach to Olavinlinna Castle. Remote inlets are weaker. Signal is unreliable in the following:

• Remote Lake Saimaa waterways away from the main channels
• The narrow channels between islands
• Interior forest areas

If you are taking a boat somewhere other than a scheduled cruise route, treat your phone as a camera and not a map.

The network question nobody mentions

Elisa is the best carrier in Savonlinna. It is Finland's largest network at around 45% market share, scores highest on overall coverage experience, and has the widest rural and Lapland reach — exactly the qualities that matter in the lake district rather than in Helsinki.

Here is the catch. Of the providers we hold Finnish pricing for, not one names the network it uses. Airalo, Saily and Holafly all publish no host carrier, in Finland or anywhere else — the DNA and Telia pairing we once showed against Airalo and Saily, and the Elisa on Holafly's rows, came from our own older data rather than from the sellers. So if Elisa access is your priority for the remote end of Saimaa, no travel eSIM can promise it, and a local Elisa prepaid SIM is the only way to be sure.

Our honest read: for the town, the castle and the main cruise channels, DNA or Telia is entirely adequate and the cheaper plans are the better buy. The Elisa argument only bites if you are genuinely heading into the quiet water.

Buying, and where you cannot

Savonlinna Airport (SVL) has no SIM counter. Buy in Helsinki before you travel east, or install a travel eSIM before you leave home. A Finnish local SIM runs about $12 and requires a passport for registration.

For a festival week plus a lake cruise, the 5GB/30-day plan at $10 is the sensible bracket — enough headroom for a congested evening without paying for volume you will not use in a town this size. If your home SIM is from an EU or EEA country, you already have Finnish coverage at no extra cost and need none of this.
