Buying a SIM card at Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL)

Short queue, uncertain shutter

Helsinki Vantaa is one of the easier airports in Europe at which to pick up a SIM, if it is open. Our record lists DNA — sold under the Saunalahti brand — and Telia Finland SIMs available in arrivals, with a peak queue of five minutes and an off-peak wait of two. That is negligible by airport standards.

The risk here is the opposite of the usual one. It is not that you will queue; it is that the R-kioski selling them may be closed. Our record says the kiosk can shut in the late evening, and Helsinki takes a lot of arrivals after that. A five-minute queue you never get to join is a twenty-four-hour delay.

A passport is required to register a Finnish prepaid SIM, so allow for the paperwork even when the counter is quiet. Free wi-fi runs through the terminal either way.

For a lot of arrivals this is all moot

Finland is in the European Union. A home plan from any EU or EEA country roams here at your domestic rates — no purchase, no registration, no kiosk hours to worry about. If that is you, the right answer at HEL is to switch data roaming on and walk to the train.

The travellers for whom this page matters are the ones connecting through Helsinki from outside Europe, or arriving on plans that do not include EU roaming. For them the kiosk hours are a genuine planning problem, and the fix is to have data live before landing rather than to gamble on a shutter.

What it costs either way

A Finnish local SIM from an airport seller runs about $12. That is reasonable, and cheaper than the equivalent in Norway. The plans you can install before you fly:

Finland's ladder does not stop at 20 GB, and it is the top rung that is the cheapest per gigabyte: $36 for 50 GB over 30 days is $0.72 a gigabyte, verified on Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. The 1 GB entry plan costs $4.00 a gigabyte, five and a half times as much. Anywhere in the middle, Finland is priced a little below Norway for the same size.

Unlimited plans exist as well — Holafly lists five days at $20.50, a figure read off Holafly's site on 18 August 2026. For a weekend in Helsinki, 3 GB does the job and the rest is noise.

If you are going further north

Helsinki is the connection point for most Lapland traffic, and coverage in Finland thins out considerably once you are away from the towns. If your itinerary continues to Rovaniemi or beyond, buy for the whole trip at HEL rather than assuming you can top up at a small northern airport — several of them have no SIM seller at all.

What we do not hold

We do not have the R-kioski's actual opening hours, its terminal or location within arrivals, or what the DNA and Telia tourist packages contain. "May close late evenings" is what our record says, and we cannot narrow it further, so a late landing should assume closed.

On networks: Airalo and Saily do not publish which Finnish operator carries their Finland traffic, and "Finn Communications" on Airalo's checkout page is its own product label rather than a carrier. Holafly's listing names nothing either — the Elisa, DNA and Telia Finland trio this page used to carry against it came from our own data rather than from the seller.
