SIM cards at Rovaniemi Airport (RVN)

No counter, and a source that argues with itself

Our record for Rovaniemi Airport states there are no SIM counters at the airport. It also quotes a peak queue of 10–15 minutes, which is not a thing a non-existent counter can have. We are not going to choose whichever half suits the page: we hold no confirmed SIM seller at RVN, and no queue figure we would print.

Treat the terminal as a place with free wi-fi and nothing to sell you. If you need working data on the day you land — and at RVN most people do, because a transfer to a hotel or a village is usually waiting — it has to be sorted before you board.

Two kinds of arrival, one answer

RVN takes two quite different crowds. December brings families flying in for Santa Claus Village, often on charter flights that unload and move straight onto coaches. The rest of the winter brings aurora chasers, who will be driven out of town after dark on their first or second night.

Neither group has time to sort out connectivity in the terminal, and neither will find anywhere to do it. The answer for both is the same: arrive with it working.

And for a large share of them, that means doing nothing at all. Finland is in the EU, so an EU or EEA home plan roams here at domestic rates. Switch data roaming on before you land and you are done, at no cost.

What Lapland does to any plan you buy

The thing worth understanding before you spend money: the Northern Lights and Santa experiences out of Rovaniemi take people off-road into wilderness without coverage. That is a fact about masts, not about plans. A 50 GB package and a 1 GB package perform identically when there is no network at all, which on a snowmobile an hour out of town is the normal condition.

For the trips out, what matters is what you downloaded first — offline maps, your booking confirmations, the operator's number written down somewhere that is not a phone that has just died in the cold.

Prices, if you are buying

Finland's market runs to 50 GB and the biggest plan is the cheapest per gigabyte — $0.72 against $4.00 at the 1 GB end. But a typical Rovaniemi trip is four or five nights with a lot of that time spent somewhere with no signal, so the honest recommendation is a small plan. Five gigabytes is generous for a week of maps, messages and photo uploads from the hotel wi-fi.

A Finnish local SIM costs about $12 at an airport seller nationally, and needs a passport to register — but there is no seller at RVN to buy one from, so that route means a shop in Rovaniemi town.

No shop names, no terminal detail, no opening hours. If a kiosk at RVN does sell SIMs, we have no record of it and would not want you planning around our guess.
