The mountain is the difference

Most of the UAE is flat, dense and thoroughly covered. Ras Al Khaimah has Jebel Jais, the country's highest peak at 1,934 metres, and mountains do to a mobile network what they do everywhere: they interrupt it.

The concrete case is the Jebel Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline at 2.83 km. The coverage note we hold says signal at the launch platform is intermittent — that is inherited rather than measured by us, though it is the ordinary behaviour of a mountain and nobody has claimed otherwise. You should not plan on a live stream, a video call or an upload from up there, and you should not rely on being reachable while you are on the mountain. Take your photos and deal with them back in town.

That is the entire coverage story, and it is more than the other emirates have. Down at sea level — the town, the hotels, Al Marjan Island — we hold no reports of coverage problems.

Buy before you come

We hold no retail data for Ras Al Khaimah: no shop list, no counter prices, nothing about where you would walk in and buy a physical SIM. Nor do we hold local-SIM pricing for the UAE as a whole, which means the local-versus-eSIM comparison we run for most countries cannot honestly be made for this one.

The practical consequence is simple. Arrive connected. An eSIM installed before you fly removes the question, and most people reaching Ras Al Khaimah have come through Dubai or Abu Dhabi anyway, where the plans are exactly the same ones — these are national products.

The calling restriction applies here too

App calling is restricted across UAE mobile networks, not by emirate. Voice and video calls over WhatsApp and FaceTime are widely reported not to work; messages, photos and voice notes are fine. Licensed apps such as BOTIM and C'Me are the local answer.

Travellers commonly report that an international travel eSIM leaves WhatsApp calling working. We have not tested it and no provider guarantees it, so treat it as a likely benefit rather than a promise, and install a backup calling app before you arrive.

Prices: one provider checked, four not

Airalo's 17 UAE plans were read off its own site on 17 August 2026 and Nomad's nine off its own on 17 August 2026. The rows we hold for eSIMCard, Saily and Holafly have not been: they came out of earlier text and are a guide to the shape of the market rather than a quote. eSIM Go has no UAE plans at all.

For a short adventure trip the small tiers are the sensible buy. Airalo's verified 1 GB / 3 days is $6.00 and its 3 GB / 7 days is $13.00. The cheapest small plans we can still price are Nomad's verified 1 GB over 7 days at $4.00 and its 3 GB month at $8.50.

A fortnight of hiking and driving is better served by the 20 GB tier. Nomad's verified 20 GB / 30 days is $29.00, or $1.45 a gigabyte — the cheapest rate anyone has confirmed here, and twice the window of Airalo's verified 20 GB / 15 days at $47.00, or $2.35 a gigabyte. An earlier version of this page carried Nomad's price as indicative and warned it might move the way Airalo's did. It has been checked since, and it moved the other way: down.

That floor is worth registering, because the UAE ladder really does stop at 20 GB of metered data. There is no 50 GB tier here of the sort sold across Europe, and $2.35 verified is expensive against a median floor of $0.98 across the 94 countries we price — this is one of the dearer markets on the site. Unlimited plans exist but are priced by the day, from $18.00 for three days to $102.50 for thirty on Airalo's verified list. The full ladder sits on our United Arab Emirates hub.

On host networks we can say little that helps. Some providers point at Etisalat or du in their own listings, none of it confirmed by anyone, and Airalo does not publish a host network for the UAE. On a mountain that would be useful to know. We don't know it, and we are not going to infer it from coverage maps.

New Year on Al Marjan Island

Ras Al Khaimah has become the alternative to Dubai for New Year's Eve fireworks, with the display over Al Marjan Island drawing people who want the spectacle without the Downtown crush. It works — the crowd is smaller — but network congestion on the island that night is still significant. It is more manageable than Dubai, which is a low bar. Download what you need in advance and agree a meeting point rather than relying on a call.
