Buying a SIM card at Abu Dhabi International (AUH)

What we can and cannot confirm about the counters

Our dataset holds no local-SIM record for the UAE: no counter price, no allowance, no validity, no shop location, no opening hours, no registration rule anyone has checked.

The listing this page inherited says both UAE operators — Etisalat, now branded e&, and du — sell in AUH arrivals, that the peak wait is about 10 minutes against roughly 3 off-peak, that a passport is required to register the SIM, and that free wi-fi runs across the terminal. That description came from the same generated source whose eSIM prices turned out to be wrong at every size we later checked, so none of it is confirmed here. A passport requirement is the norm across the Gulf and is very likely right; the queue times are the sort of number that gets invented, and we would not plan a connection around them.

If you do intend to buy on arrival, bring your passport and leave yourself time you have not budgeted from a figure on a website.

The thing that makes the counter a poor choice

It is widely reported that voice and video calling over WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar apps does not work on UAE mobile networks. Text, images and voice notes pass through normally; it is the calling function that fails. The licensed local alternatives travellers are pointed to are BOTIM and C'Me.

The common workaround is to arrive on an international travel eSIM, on the reasoning that its data does not break out onto the local network in the usual way. We have not tested this and none of the providers we list guarantees that any specific app will work in the UAE. It is widely reported traveller experience rather than a promise — treat it as likely, not certain, and install a licensed calling app as a backup before you fly.

That is the whole case for pre-installing at AUH. It is not about the queue, whose length we do not know, and it is not about the counter price, which we cannot quote.

Why we cannot compare local against eSIM here

On most country pages this site sets a local prepaid SIM against the travel eSIMs and tells you which wins. For the UAE we cannot. We hold no local-SIM data at all, so any statement about whether buying on arrival is good value would be invented. It is not in the dataset and we are not going to estimate it.

What we can tell you is what the alternative costs.

UAE plan prices

Airalo's 17 UAE plans were read off its own site on 17 August 2026 and Nomad's nine off its own on 17 August 2026. Saily's rows came out of earlier text and are indicative — check the checkout page before you pay. The eSIMCard and Holafly rows we used to hold have been withdrawn: eSIMCard's because we read its site and found ours wrong, Holafly's because they described windows it does not sell.

The verified column is the correction. This page previously printed Airalo's ten-gigabyte plan at $18.70 and its thirty-day unlimited at $55.00; the checked prices are $27.00 and $102.50. Every Airalo figure we had was too low, by up to 44%.

That changes the shape of the table rather than one cell in it. On the numbers we now hold, Airalo is the dearest metered seller in the UAE at every size — but it is also the only one whose prices anyone has read off a live checkout, so the gap may be smaller than it looks once the rest are checked.

The ladder genuinely stops at 20 GB. There is no 50 GB tier for the UAE of the kind sold across Europe, so $2.35 per gigabyte is the cheapest verified rate rather than a mid-point, and it is dear: the median floor across the 94 countries we price is $0.98, and the UAE ranks 75th of them. Above 20 GB the only products are unlimited plans sold by the day — Airalo's verified list runs $18.00 for three days to $102.50 for thirty. Holafly's seven UAE rows have been withdrawn — they described one-day and twenty-day windows it does not sell in any of the 44 countries we have read. In a country where hotels, malls and taxis are saturated with wi-fi, those are hard to justify for a short stay.

One provider gap: eSIM Go sells nothing for the UAE. The country is covered by eSIMCard, Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Holafly.

A UAE plan covers the whole country, so if you land at Abu Dhabi and drive to Dubai, or the other way round, you do not need a second purchase.

Networks

Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly publish no host network for the UAE, or anywhere; the Etisalat entries our data carried against Holafly's and eSIMCard's rows came from our own records rather than from either seller. eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for the Emirates and hold no network for it here. There is no basis here for choosing a plan by network, and coverage in and around Abu Dhabi is not something we hold any record of problems with.
