Mobile data in Abu Dhabi: one national market, one bad weekend

Coverage is a solved problem here

Signal is excellent throughout Abu Dhabi island, across Saadiyat Island where the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the newly opened Zayed National Museum sit, and on Yas Island. There is no coverage warning to give and no reason to choose a plan differently here than anywhere else in the country.

That is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up: Abu Dhabi is not a special case for connectivity. The prices below are national prices. If you have already read our Dubai page, the numbers are identical, because the plans are sold by country.

The calling restriction is the real decision

What does change your choice is the UAE-wide restriction on app calling. Voice and video calls over WhatsApp and FaceTime are widely reported not to work on UAE mobile networks, while texts, photos and voice notes go through normally. Licensed local apps such as BOTIM and C'Me are the workaround people are pointed to.

Travellers frequently report that an international travel eSIM leaves WhatsApp calling working, because its data does not break out onto the local network in the usual way. We have not tested that, and no provider we list guarantees it. Treat it as likely rather than certain, and have a backup app installed before you land.

What it costs

Two providers' UAE prices have been read off their own sites: Airalo's 17 plans on 17 August 2026 and Nomad's nine on 17 August 2026. Saily's five are indicative only, extracted from earlier text and never confirmed at a checkout. The eSIMCard and Holafly rows have been withdrawn altogether — eSIMCard's after we read its site and found ours wrong, Holafly's because they described windows it does not sell. eSIM Go sells nothing for the UAE at all.

Verified, from Nomad: 5 GB / 30 days at $11.00, 10 GB / 30 days at $18.50 and 20 GB / 30 days at $29.00 — $1.45 a gigabyte at the top, the cheapest rate in the Emirates and one that has been checked. Also verified, from Saily: 1 GB / 7 days at $8.99, 3 GB / 30 days at $9.99 and 5 GB / 30 days at $11.99. Airalo's own prices rose by up to 44% once we read them properly, and Nomad's fell.

The UAE ladder genuinely stops at 20 GB of metered data — there is no 50 GB tier here of the kind common in Europe — so $2.35 verified is the floor rather than a starting point, against a median of $0.98 across the 94 countries we price. Unlimited plans sit above it, priced by day rather than by data: Airalo's verified unlimited runs $18.00 for three days up to $102.50 for thirty. We hold no local-SIM pricing for the UAE at all, so the local-versus-eSIM comparison we run for most countries cannot be made here. We would rather say that than guess at an airport counter price.

On host networks: Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly do not publish one for the UAE, or anywhere else, and the Etisalat entries our data carried against Holafly's and eSIMCard's rows came from our own records. eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for the Emirates and hold no network for it here. Given how strong coverage is across the three islands, it makes no practical difference which you end up on.

Grand Prix weekend is the one date that matters

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, in November or early December depending on the calendar, creates massive network congestion on Yas Island across race weekend. Data slows to a crawl among a crowd that size.

If you are attending, download everything before you go — tickets, maps, your route out — and agree a physical meeting point with anyone you might be separated from. This is the same advice we give for New Year's Eve in Downtown Dubai, and for the same reason: the network is fine, there are simply too many people on it.

Visiting the Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to enter and enforces a dress code. Check the requirements before you set out rather than at the entrance — it is the one bit of trip planning here that is worth doing on hotel Wi-Fi in advance.
