Mobile data in Visby and across Gotland

Visby town is fine. The rest of Gotland is not.

Inside the walls you will not have a problem. Visby town has good 4G, measured at an island average of around 40 Mbps — usable for everything a visitor does, though noticeably slower than the 75 Mbps Swedish national average.

Ride out of town and it changes. Coverage across the rest of Gotland is patchy: mostly 4G along the main roads, falling to 3G or nothing elsewhere. The known dead zones are the rural areas of northern and eastern Gotland and the interior farmland belt.

So the single most useful thing on this page: download offline maps while you are still in Visby. Cycling the island is the main reason people come, and signal drops frequently the moment you leave town.

If you already have an EU or EEA plan, buy nothing

Sweden is in the EU and roam-like-at-home applies. Gotland is not treated as a special case — your home allowance works in Visby exactly as it does in Stockholm. Check the fair-use data cap on your own bundle, and if it covers your trip, stop here. You do not need anything on this page.

Telia is the network to want, and no eSIM promises it

Telia has the best coverage on Gotland and the strongest rural and archipelago reach in Sweden generally. What we cannot tell you is whether your eSIM lands on it: Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly publish no Swedish host network at all; the Telia, Tele2 and Telenor trio this page once printed against Holafly's rows came from our own data rather than from Holafly. On an island where the network genuinely matters, that is a real limitation of every travel eSIM here.

Tele2 and Telenor share the Net4Mobility network and switched 5G on across all of it in September 2025, reaching 99.9% of the population and 90% of the landmass. On paper that is world-class. On Gotland, the gap between population coverage and landmass coverage is precisely where you will be cycling, which is why Telia stays our recommendation here.

What to buy, and where you cannot buy it

Airalo's prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026; the Saily row from Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. An earlier version of this table offered a Nomad 5GB month as the cheaper option per gigabyte, on a price nobody had checked. Nomad's Sweden prices have since been read at source and its 5GB is $12.50, above Airalo's, so the row has gone.

Gotland does not need a large plan. You spend the days outdoors, often out of signal, and what you actually consume is maps and messaging. Five gigabytes is generous for a week.

Buying a physical SIM on the island is the harder route. Visby Airport has no SIM counter at all. There is a small Pressbyrån in the Visby ferry terminal, but do not build a plan around it. If you want a Swedish SIM in your hand, buy it in Stockholm before you fly or sail — a starter SIM runs around $10, and take your passport, because Sweden has required prepaid SIM registration since August 2022. This is the situation an eSIM is genuinely good for: install it at home and the island's thin retail stops mattering.

Medieval Week and the seasonal squeeze

Visby is intensely seasonal. July and August are the peak, and Medieval Week in August pulls more than 40,000 visitors inside a walled town built for a small fraction of that. Expect network congestion then. It is slowness rather than outage, but it is real, and it is worst in the old town where everyone is.

Midsommar in June is the other busy point. From October to April Gotland is very quiet, which means uncongested networks and fast data — and also far fewer places open to sell you anything.
