Buying a SIM card at Kiruna Airport (KRN)

Our own record disagrees with itself

Kiruna is a small Arctic airport and what we hold on it is both thin and internally inconsistent. One line says there are SIM kiosks in the arrivals hall. Another says there are no SIM purchase options at Kiruna Airport at all. Both are in the same source, and we cannot tell you which is right.

What we do hold: reported waits of about 2 minutes at peak and 1 minute off-peak — which, if anything, reads like a counter that is rarely busy rather than one that does not exist. The same record says no ID is required for a prepaid SIM purchase, and that is the one line here we will contradict: Sweden has required prepaid SIMs to be registered against ID since August 2022, and both the Arlanda and Landvetter records say a passport is needed at the counter. Assume you will be asked for yours. Free wi-fi is available across the terminal.

That is genuinely everything. No shop names, no opening hours, no prices. We are not going to fill the gap with plausible-sounding detail.

Why the uncertainty matters more here than elsewhere

At a big-city airport, an unclear SIM situation is an inconvenience — you buy in town the next morning. Kiruna is different. People fly here to go somewhere else: out to the ice, north to the aurora belt, into country where the next shop is a long drive away and the mobile coverage is whatever the nearest mast decides to give you.

If you land at Kiruna without data, planning to sort it out later, "later" may be several hours and a hundred kilometres away. Arrive with the problem already solved. That is the whole recommendation on this page, and it does not depend on which of our two contradictory lines is correct.

The network problem, which an eSIM does not fix

Here is the uncomfortable part. Coverage in the far north is not uniform between Swedish operators, so which network you are on is a real variable rather than a technicality — and for eSIMs we cannot tell you.

Holafly lists no carrier for Sweden — the Telia, Tele2 and Telenor trio this page used to show against it came from our own data rather than from the seller. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Sweden either. Airalo's Swedish product is sold under the name Vän, which is a retail label and not a carrier, whatever it looks like in a table.

So for a trip into remote Norrbotten, the honest position is this: a physical prepaid SIM from a named Swedish operator — Telia, Tele2, Telenor Sweden or Three — is the only option where you know whose towers you are relying on. Buy it in Stockholm on the way through, or in Kiruna town, not at the airport. A Swedish prepaid SIM runs around $10 at airport prices nationally.

An eSIM is still the more convenient choice for a town-based trip, and for many people it will work fine. It is just not a coverage guarantee, and nobody should sell it to you as one.
