Coverage in Malmö is a non-issue

There is nothing to warn you about. Malmö is well covered by every Swedish carrier, 5G is strong through the city centre, and there are no dead zones worth a tourist's attention. Average 4G measures 68 Mbps and 5G around 165 Mbps, both comfortably above the 75 Mbps Swedish national average for 4G.

Telia is our general recommendation for Sweden because of its rural and archipelago reach, but that advantage does not apply in a city like this. In Malmö, Telia and the Tele2/Telenor network are equally good. Tele2 and Telenor share the Net4Mobility infrastructure and switched 5G on across all of it in September 2025, covering 99.9% of the population. Pick on price, not network.

The real question is Copenhagen

Malmö is the natural base for a trip that also takes in Copenhagen. The Øresund train runs every 20 minutes and the crossing takes 35 minutes, so people do it as a day trip without thinking. Navigation, tickets and timetables all want data on both sides of the water.

Here is the trap. A travel eSIM sold as a Sweden plan covers Sweden. It does not automatically cover Denmark, and the bridge is an international border however casual the train ride feels. If Copenhagen is on your itinerary, buy a Europe-wide or regional plan rather than a Sweden-only one, or accept that you will be offline for the Danish half of the day.

Check the coverage list on the specific plan before you pay. This is the most common way people get caught out in Malmö, and it costs nothing to avoid.

If you hold an EU or EEA SIM, you are already done

Roam-like-at-home covers both sides. Your home allowance works in Malmö, and Danish carriers roam at EU rates for EU SIM holders, so Copenhagen is covered too. Check your bundle's fair-use data cap and buy nothing.

That is genuinely the right answer for most European visitors here. The rest of this page is for travellers from outside the EEA — or EU customers whose roaming allowance is smaller than their trip.

What to buy

Airalo's prices were read from its site on 13 August 2026; the Saily row from Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. An earlier version of this table offered a Nomad 5GB month as the cheaper option per gigabyte, on a price nobody had checked. Nomad's Sweden prices have since been read at source and its 5GB is $12.50, above Airalo's $10, so the row has gone.

A city trip burns data faster than a rural one — maps running constantly, transit apps, ride-hailing between the centre and Sturup. Three gigabytes is the sensible floor for a long weekend. One gigabyte works only if you are on hotel or café WiFi most of the time, which in Malmö you probably will be.

Buying a physical SIM in Malmö

This is easy, unlike some of Sweden. Pressbyrån at Malmö Central Station sells SIMs, and there is a convenience shop at Malmö Sturup Airport (MMX). Take your passport: prepaid SIMs have had to be registered against ID everywhere in Sweden since August 2022, so there is a short form at the counter. Budget roughly $10 for a starter SIM.

Whether it is worth doing is another matter. At $3.99 to $7 for an eSIM that works the moment you land, the physical SIM mainly earns its place if you want a Swedish number or you are staying long enough for a local top-up to beat travel-eSIM pricing. Note that a Swedish prepaid SIM has the same Copenhagen problem — it is a Swedish plan, and Denmark is abroad unless roaming is included.
