Mobile data in Uppsala: you probably already have it

The honest answer: Uppsala needs nothing special

Most visitors reach Uppsala as a day trip from Stockholm, 40 minutes by train, and whatever you bought for Stockholm covers it perfectly. There is no Uppsala-specific problem to solve here: no coverage quirk, no local carrier that does better, no reason to buy a second plan. If you already have a Swedish SIM or eSIM, you are done.

Coverage is excellent throughout. This is a compact university city with dense 4G and 5G everywhere a visitor goes, and no dead zones worth mentioning. Average 4G measures around 65 Mbps — a little under the 75 Mbps Swedish national figure — with 5G nearer 150 Mbps. Any of the four major carriers works. Telia's real advantage in Sweden is rural and archipelago reach, which counts for nothing in a city you can cross on foot.

Valborg is the exception, and it is a big one

The 30th of April is Valborg, Walpurgis Night, and in Uppsala it is not a quiet folk custom. It is a vast student celebration that fills the city, and the mobile network goes down with it — expect extreme congestion citywide for the day.

What that means in practice: agree a meeting point in advance rather than trusting messaging to find people, screenshot your train times, and download offline maps the night before. Buying a bigger data plan will not help you. The constraint is the tower, not your allowance. If you are coming to see the cathedral and the university rather than the party, almost any other date is easier.

Arlanda is the useful piece of geography

Uppsala sits very close to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is where most people arrive. That is also where to sort your connection out: an eSIM installed before you land, or a physical SIM bought at the airport. A starter pack runs around $10, and you will need your passport — Swedish prepaid SIMs have required ID registration since August 2022.

Uppsala does have carrier stores if you leave it too late, so this is a convenience point rather than a warning. But there is no price advantage to waiting, and buying at Arlanda or in Stockholm is simply less effort.

If you are buying something anyway

Airalo's prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026. The Saily row was read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026.

Almost none of them will tell you which network you land on: Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no Swedish host network at all, and Holafly's listing of Telia, Tele2 and Telenor is its own unconfirmed claim. In a city like Uppsala it makes no practical difference. A day in Uppsala spent on maps and messaging will not trouble a 1GB plan; the reason to buy larger is the rest of your Swedish trip, not this city.

One thing to check before you buy at all

Sweden is in the EU. If your SIM was issued anywhere in the EU or EEA, roam-like-at-home applies and your normal allowance works in Uppsala at no extra cost and with nothing to set up. Look at the fair-use data cap on your own bundle. For most European visitors, that is the whole answer and everything above is unnecessary.
