The city is not the question

Connectivity across Gothenburg is strong throughout — the centre, Liseberg, the harbour, the area around the Feskekôrka fish market. Nobody arriving for a city weekend needs to think about which network they are on, and there is no Gothenburg-specific coverage warning to give.

What makes this city worth its own page is that most people do not stay in it. Gothenburg is a base for the West Sweden coast and a staging post for Norway, and both of those change the answer.

Out into the Bohuslän archipelago

Ferry routes leave Gothenburg for the Bohuslän islands, and signal follows the same pattern as Stockholm's archipelago: good on the runs close to the city, gradually dropping the further out you go. The outer islands are where it thins.

This is not severe enough to need a special plan. It is enough to justify downloading ferry timetables and maps before you board rather than assuming you can look them up mid-crossing.

The drive to Norway is the real trap

Oslo is about three hours up the E6, and the E6/E45 corridor has good Telia coverage the whole way — on the Swedish side.

The moment you cross the border, a Sweden-only travel eSIM stops working. Every plan priced on this page is a Sweden plan. If a day or an overnight in Norway is on your itinerary, you need either a regional Europe plan or a second country plan, and you should sort that out before you set off rather than at a service station outside Strömstad. We hold verified prices for Sweden plans only, so check the provider's own regional pricing directly.

One exception, and it is a large one: if you hold an EU or EEA SIM, roam-like-at-home covers Norway as well as Sweden, because Norway is in the EEA. European visitors driving to Oslo can ignore this section entirely. Everyone else cannot.

Buying a SIM at Landvetter or in town

Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) has Lycamobile sold at the Pressbyrån in the terminal. Queues are short by the standards of bigger European airports — about eight minutes at peak — but bring your passport: Sweden has required prepaid SIMs to be registered against ID since August 2022, so there is a form at the counter. A starter SIM runs around $10 at airport prices.

Cheap and quick, then, but not instant. The eSIM case in Gothenburg is about being connected the second you land and about crossing borders cleanly, not about price.

What the eSIMs cost

The Airalo figures were read from its own site on 13 August 2026, the Nomad one from Nomad's on 18 August. An earlier version of this table offered a Nomad 5 GB month as the cheaper option per gigabyte, on a price nobody had checked; the checked price is $12.50, above Airalo's 5 GB plans, so that row has gone and a genuinely cheaper Nomad plan has taken its place. Sweden's ladder runs unusually high for Europe — the 50 GB tier works out at $0.84 a gigabyte against $1.60 at 10 GB, so anyone staying a month or tethering a laptop should look at the top of the range rather than the bottom. On host networks, we can say less than we would like. Holafly's own listing names no carrier — the Telia, Tele2 and Telenor trio this page used to carry against it came from our own data. Airalo, Saily and Nomad do not publish a host network for Sweden either — the name "Vän" at Airalo's checkout is a product name, not a carrier. In central Gothenburg it makes no practical difference. On the outer islands it might, and we cannot tell you which way.
