Assume you cannot buy anything at Langnes

Our source for Tromsø Airport Langnes states plainly that there are no SIM counters at the airport. The same source also quotes a peak queue of 10–15 minutes, which cannot be true of a counter that does not exist. Where a record contradicts itself we do not pick the half that reads better, so: we hold no confirmed SIM seller at TOS, and we hold no queue time worth printing.

Plan on that basis. If your connection matters on the day you land — a rental car booking, a pickup to arrange, a tour operator to reach — do not leave it to the terminal. Free wi-fi is available at Langnes, which is enough to send a message and read a map, and not enough to build an itinerary around.

The cheapest option is the one you may already have

Before buying anything, check what your home plan does here. Norway sits in the EEA, and EU and EEA plans roam in Norway at domestic rates — the same allowance you use at home, no purchase, no registration. Norway being outside the EU proper makes people assume otherwise, and a surprising number of visitors buy data they were already carrying.

If you are arriving from outside that bloc, an eSIM installed at home is the only thing that reliably works from the moment the aircraft doors open. A Norwegian physical SIM needs a passport at registration, and buying one means finding a shop in Tromsø city rather than at the airport.

Aurora tours go where nothing reaches

The reason most people land at TOS in winter is the aurora, and chasing it means driving well out of town into wilderness with zero coverage. That is worth stating flatly because it inverts the usual advice: the plan you buy makes no difference at all once the minibus is an hour out. What matters is what is already on the phone.

Download offline maps of the area, keep your operator's phone number written somewhere that is not the phone, and expect long stretches with nothing. Cold does the rest — batteries drop fast at Arctic winter temperatures, so a phone kept in an inside pocket is worth more than an extra 10 GB.

What plans cost if you need one

A Norwegian local SIM from an airport counter runs about $18, though at Langnes we have no counter to sell you one. Bought before you fly:

Norway's market runs to 50 GB, and that top tier is the cheapest per gigabyte in it — Airalo's 50 GB over 30 days at $36 is $0.72 a gigabyte, verified on its own site on 13 August 2026. An earlier version of this page gave Nomad's 50 GB as $29 rather than $45, and called it cheaper again per gigabyte. That was wrong: Nomad's 50 GB is $45, read off Nomad's site on 17 August 2026, which is $9 more than Airalo's.

For a four-night aurora trip none of this is the point. A 3 GB or 5 GB plan covers maps, messaging and a few uploads, and the large tiers only earn their price on longer stays or heavy tethering.

What we do not know

We hold no shop names, no terminal layout and no opening hours for TOS, and we are not going to invent them. If someone tells you there is a kiosk selling SIMs in arrivals, they may be right — we simply have no record of it.

On networks: Airalo, Saily and Nomad do not publish which Norwegian operator carries their traffic, and the "Lofotel" label on Airalo's checkout is a product name rather than a carrier.
