Lofoten and Svolvær: good signal on the E10, none on the good hikes

Lofoten is not Norway's average

Norway records an average speed of 170 Mbps. Lofoten records 25 Mbps. Both numbers are true and the gap is the whole story of connectivity in the archipelago: you are on a chain of mountainous islands with a few thousand residents, a single main road and a lot of vertical rock between the masts and you.

Twenty-five megabits is fine. It uploads photographs, it streams maps, it makes video calls. What it will not do is exist everywhere.

Where the signal goes, and where it stops

Coverage follows the E10 and the towns. Svolvær, Henningsvær, Reine and Å all have reasonable 4G, and so does most of the main road between them. Telenor is the best network across the archipelago — the same conclusion as the rest of Norway, where Telenor has the widest rural and fjord reach and most travel eSIMs run on it.

The dead zones are specific and worth memorising:

• Reinebringen above the midpoint of the trail. The view everyone comes for, the signal nobody has.
• Remote beaches including Utakleiv and Haukland.
• The interior of Moskenesøy.
• Ferry crossings between the outer islands.

GPS itself does not need a mobile signal. Download your maps for offline use before you leave town and the blue dot keeps working on the trail even when nothing else does. That single habit removes most of the practical risk of hiking here.

Buy your SIM before you get here

Svolvær Airport (SVJ) is tiny and has no SIM options at all. There is no counter, no kiosk, nothing to queue for. Svolvær town has small carrier shops, but stock and opening hours are what you would expect from a fishing town of a few thousand people.

So: sort connectivity in Oslo, Bergen or Bodø on the way through, or install an eSIM before you leave home. An eSIM is the cleaner answer precisely because Lofoten is the one place in Norway where turning up and buying is unreliable.

If your SIM was issued in the EU or EEA, you need none of this — Norway is in the EEA and you roam at home rates. Check your fair-use roaming cap and stop reading.

A Lofoten week uses less data than you would think, because so much of the day has no signal to use. The exception is anyone uploading raw photographs or video from Reine in the evening, in which case take the 10GB plan and stop worrying.

Seasons change the crowds, not the coverage

Summer, June to August, brings the midnight sun and the crowds that come with it — Haukland beach and Reine get genuinely busy, and shared masts get busier with them. January and February bring aurora hunters and much shorter days. Neither season changes where the masts are; both change how many people are on them.
