Tromsø — good signal in town, none where you are going

The city is fine

Inside Tromsø there is nothing to solve. Telenor's 4G is good across the city, which is what you would expect of the largest urban centre in northern Norway. Cafés, hotels, the harbour, the cable car — all covered.

If your visit is museums, restaurants and a walk over the bridge, buy the smallest plan that spans your stay and stop thinking about it.

The aurora problem

Tromsø is Europe's primary destination for the northern lights, and aurora hunting is not a city activity. It means driving or snowmobiling 30 to 80 km out, into fjords and onto mountain plateaus, chasing a gap in the cloud. That wilderness has no signal from any carrier.

This is standard for aurora tourism rather than a Norwegian failing. Your guide handles the logistics, the route and the safety margin, and you are there to watch the sky. But it means the several hours in the middle of your most important night here are hours in which your phone is a camera and a torch, not a connected device.

So the useful preparation is offline, and it has to be done the night before — not in the field, where there is nothing to download over.

• Offline maps of the specific route your tour uses. Not just Tromsø; the roads you will actually be on.

One piece of general advice worth repeating in this specific place: cold flattens phone batteries fast, and an aurora night is several hours outdoors in an Arctic winter. Carry a power bank and keep the phone inside your coat between shots.

What to buy

Norwegian pricing is national — there is no Arctic surcharge and no Tromsø plan. Airalo's Lofotel packages were read from its own site on 13 August 2026:

A typical aurora trip is three to five nights and needs very little data, because the headline evenings are spent out of coverage. The 3 GB or 5 GB plans are the sensible band. The 50 GB is included above because it is the cheapest verified gigabyte in Norway and worth knowing about — but it is a plan for a month-long stay, not a long weekend under the lights.

Saily lists 1 GB for seven days at $3.99, read off Saily's own checkout on 18 August 2026. Nomad's 5 GB for 30 days is $12.50, read off Nomad's site on 17 August 2026 — an earlier version of this page put it at $9, which was wrong and made Nomad look like the cheap way into a short aurora trip. It is not: Airalo's 5 GB month at $10.50 is the cheaper of the two.

No provider publishes a confirmed host network for Norway. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly all publish nothing — the Telenor and Telia pairing this page used to show against Holafly came from our own data rather than from the seller. In the Arctic interior the point is academic, because the domestic networks do not reach out there either.

Before you buy anything

Norway is in the EEA. An EU or EEA phone plan roams here at your domestic rate, which covers a large share of aurora visitors. Check that before you buy a travel eSIM at all.
