Merzouga: signal in the village, nothing in the erg

Coverage here is a short story

Merzouga village has Maroc Telecom signal. The Erg Chebbi dunes start at the edge of the village, and about 2 km into the dune sea there is no signal on any carrier at all.

That is the entire coverage picture, and no purchase changes it. There is no plan, provider or handset that reaches a desert camp. If you are reading this to work out which eSIM performs best in the Sahara, the answer is that they perform identically, because none of them works.

It is also, arguably, the point of going. The Sahara night sky is extraordinary precisely because there is no light pollution and no data.

Sort this before you leave the village

Everything you will want out there has to be on the phone before you ride out:

• Offline maps of the tracks, and a GPS pin for your camp
• The camp's phone number saved locally, not sitting in an email you cannot open
• Anything to read or listen to during the overnight stay, downloaded in advance

On the sunrise camel trek the guide handles navigation. Your phone is for photography, not for finding your way.

If you want signal in Merzouga itself

Maroc Telecom is the network that reaches the village. Nothing we hold lets you buy that with confidence as an eSIM: the Maroc Telecom and Orange pair our data once carried against eSIMCard's rows came from our own text rather than from eSIMCard, and Saily and Holafly — once credited with the same pair — name no carrier for Morocco or for any country. So if village coverage genuinely matters to you — a work call, a flight change, a family check-in — the dependable route is a physical Maroc Telecom SIM bought earlier in the trip, in Marrakech, Fes or Errachidia rather than out here. For most people that is overkill. You are in the village for a few hours either side of the desert night, and hotel and camp wifi covers it.

What the plans cost

The honest verdict

Buy the cheapest plan that covers your Morocco dates and stop thinking about it. Spend the effort on downloads instead. Two nights in the dunes with a dead phone is a better trip than two nights spent hunting for a bar of signal that is not there.
