Morocco: expensive eSIM data, and one network that matters

The number that shapes everything

Morocco has the most expensive travel eSIM data of any country in this comparison set. The best fixed-data rate we hold is $2.15 per gigabyte, and most plans sit between $3 and $4.40. In Italy the equivalent floor is $0.70. Nothing about Moroccan networks justifies that gap to a traveller — it is wholesale pricing, and you pay it.

That single fact pushes the balance towards buying locally more than it does in most countries, and it makes trip length the deciding variable.

Buying locally

The three national carriers are Maroc Telecom (IAM), Orange Morocco and Inwi Mobile. SIMs are available at Casablanca Mohammed V and Marrakech airports, at carrier stores in the cities, and in supermarkets. Our figure for an airport SIM is around $12.

A passport is required for registration. That is the friction: a counter, a document, a few minutes. Against eSIM pricing at $3 a gigabyte, most people staying more than a few days will find it worth the trouble.

The eSIM options

We hold nothing at all for eSIM Go in Morocco — no plan, no price and no host network — so it is not comparable here. The Airalo, Nomad and Holafly rows were read from live checkouts, on 13, 17 and 18 August 2026; the rest are indicative. None of Airalo, Nomad, Saily or Holafly publishes which Moroccan network its local eSIM roams onto, so those cells stay empty rather than carry a guess. An earlier version of this table put Orange Morocco against Nomad, and understated its 1 GB by two dollars. A later one put Maroc Telecom and Orange against Holafly, and understated its three-day plan by $2.80. Reading Holafly's prices at source on 18 August 2026 fixed the price and removed the carriers: it names no host network for Morocco, or for any country it sells.

Unlimited is where it gets competitive

Because fixed data is priced so high in Morocco, the unlimited plans look better here than they do elsewhere:

All three ladders are now read from the sellers' own sites. Holafly's are $2.80 to $10 higher than the indicative figures this page used to carry, which changes the ranking: it still undercuts Airalo at all four shared lengths, but Nomad undercuts Holafly at all four, by $6.90 at ten days. Holafly's remaining claim is the long end — nobody else sells 15 or 30 days of unlimited data here. At $31.50 a week of unlimited data is still better value than $34 for 10 GB. The catch is the usual one: Holafly has no hotspot. On a Morocco road trip, where one phone navigates and a laptop may need to work from a riad, that is a genuine disqualifier.

Maroc Telecom, and where the signal stops

Maroc Telecom has the widest coverage in the country, including the Sahara approaches, the Atlas Mountains and the south. For the Marrakech–Merzouga desert run or the mountain passes it is the network that matters, and no seller on this page will promise it — the Maroc Telecom name our data once carried against eSIMCard's rows came from our own text rather than from eSIMCard. Orange has the faster 5G in the cities. The national average is 27 Mbps — modest, but fine for maps and messaging.

Known gaps: the deep Sahara around the Merzouga camel trek routes, remote High Atlas passes such as Tizi n'Test, the upper sections of the Dades Gorge, and the far south around Dakhla. The Tarifa–Tangier ferry crossing keeps signal from both sides.

Verdict

Three days in Marrakech: buy an eSIM, $2.90 to $6 covers it, and the passport queue is not worth it for a weekend.

A week or more, or a desert and mountain itinerary: buy a local Maroc Telecom SIM at around $12. It is the cheapest route to real volume and the best coverage in the places where coverage is scarce.

Heavy user staying in cities, phone only: Nomad's unlimited plans up to ten days, which are cheaper than both Holafly's and Airalo's now that all three are verified. Above ten days Holafly is the only unlimited seller here, at $57.90 for 15 days and $84.90 for 30.
