Chefchaouen: the town is covered, the hills above it are not

The town itself is not a special case

We will be direct about this, because padding it would waste your time. Signal in the medina and around the plaza areas is good. Nothing about being in Chefchaouen changes which provider you should choose, how much data you should buy, or what you will pay. If you have already sorted out data for Morocco, you have sorted out Chefchaouen.

What is worth a page is the geography immediately outside the town, because Chefchaouen is a base for walking in a way that Fès and Marrakech are not, and the walks leave coverage quickly.

The Rif trails and the Akchour gorge

Head up onto the Rif mountain hiking routes above town, or out toward the Akchour waterfalls, and coverage drops significantly.

Akchour is the one most visitors do: roughly 7 km return to the waterfalls and the bridge, and the most popular short hike from Chefchaouen. The gorge is intermittently covered. The waterfall area itself has limited signal on most carriers. That is a normal outcome for a steep-sided valley and no eSIM or local SIM changes it — a plan buys you data, not reach into a gorge.

Download your AllTrails route before you leave town, while you are still on the good signal in the medina. Tell your riad roughly when you expect to be back. That is the entire preparation required, and it costs nothing.

You arrive here overland

Chefchaouen has no airport of its own. Visitors come by road, usually from Tangier or Fès, which has one practical consequence for this page: the airport SIM counter is several hours behind you by the time you get here.

A Moroccan airport SIM runs about $12 in our data, and Morocco requires a passport or ID to register one. If you want the local option, the sensible moment to buy it was at whichever airport you flew into, or in a larger city. Which shops in Chefchaouen itself sell prepaid SIMs, and at what price, is not something we have checked, and we are not going to guess for a town this size.

Buy for Morocco, not for Chefchaouen

Most people spend two or three nights here inside a longer Moroccan trip, so buy a plan that covers the whole itinerary.

Airalo's Moroccan prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026, and they are high by international standards: 1 GB over 3 days at $6, 3 GB over 7 days at $16, 5 GB over 30 days at $22. Nomad's were read from its own site on 17 August 2026 and come in lower at every size from 3 GB up — $14, $17, $21 for 10 GB, $25 for 20 GB and $45 for a 50 GB month, which at $0.90 a gigabyte is the best verified value in the country and worth knowing if you are here for a fortnight.

An eSIMCard plan used to sit below that; its rows have been withdrawn, because we read its site on 18 August 2026 and the figures we held were not the ones it charges. An earlier version of this page put Nomad's 1 GB over 7 days at $5 in the same bracket; it has since been checked and is $7, which makes it the dearest single gigabyte in Morocco.
