Marrakech Airport SIM cards, and the first hour in the medina

One desk, ten minutes

Marrakech is Morocco's busiest tourist entry point and its airport offers exactly one carrier in arrivals: Maroc Telecom. There is no choice to make and no comparison to do at the counter — you either join the queue or you do not.

The wait is ten minutes at peak and three off-peak, shorter than Casablanca despite the passenger numbers. Morocco requires passport registration for every SIM, so bring yours out before you reach the front; the paperwork is the slow part of the transaction, not the payment.

A Moroccan airport SIM runs about $12 in our data. We do not hold what allowance that includes, and we hold no opening hours for the desk. Menara takes late European charter flights, so if you are landing after the evening rush, do not assume the counter is staffed. Free wifi is available in the terminal.

Why the first hour here matters more than most

Most arrivals go straight to a riad in the medina, and that is a genuinely awkward journey to make with no data. Riads sit down unnamed alleys behind unmarked doors, and the address you were emailed is often a description rather than a location. Add a taxi negotiation at the airport and a driver who will only take you as far as the nearest vehicle-accessible gate, and the first hour is the part of the trip where a working phone earns its keep.

Two things fix that, and only one of them costs money. Buying at the Maroc Telecom desk connects you before you leave the building, at the cost of ten minutes and a passport scan. Downloading the Marrakech area in an offline maps app before you fly costs nothing, works with no signal at all, and is worth doing regardless of what you buy — the alleys are where positioning is least reliable and where you least want to be waiting on a page to load.

What the eSIMs cost, and where the ladder stops

We used to tell readers that nothing above 10 GB is sold for Morocco, then corrected that to 20 GB. Both were wrong. The ceiling is 50 GB: Nomad sells one for $45, which at $0.90 a gigabyte is the best rate in the country and the cheapest verified rate anywhere in Africa. The biggest plan is nearly always the best rate, and here it is by a wide margin.

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. Airalo's rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; the others are indicative listings we have not confirmed.

The best verified rate in Morocco is $0.90 a gigabyte, on Nomad's 50 GB over 30 days at $45; its 20 GB at $25 is $1.25. Everything smaller is worse: Airalo's verified 1 GB at $6 is $6 a gigabyte, and its 5 GB over 15 days at $21 is $4.20. By comparison, Greece runs to $0.84 a gigabyte and New Zealand to $0.98, so Morocco is now in the same band rather than an outlier. An earlier version of this page put the floor at $2.10 and called the ladder too short to escape; that was Airalo's best rate, published while Nomad's Moroccan prices sat unchecked in our data.

Which is why the $12 desk in arrivals is the reasonable default for a normal week here: it needs to include only about 6 GB to beat the best rate the eSIM market offers. The full ladder is on the Morocco hub.

What we cannot tell you about networks

Buying at the desk means you are on Maroc Telecom, because that is who is selling. Buying an eSIM means you do not know.

Airalo does not publish a host network for Morocco. Choukran is its retail name for Moroccan plans, nothing more — it is not a carrier and it does not indicate one. eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for this country and hold no network for it here. Holafly and Saily name no host network here or anywhere else, whatever earlier versions of this page said. Earlier versions of this site presented those names as fact. They were not. Nomad names no host network here either, though an earlier version of this page said it named Orange Morocco.

If your trip stays in Marrakech, the distinction is academic — the city is well covered by everyone. It starts to matter if you are driving out towards the Atlas or the south, and that is a second argument for buying from the operator directly.
