Mobile data in Helsingør, and what happens on the ferry

Coverage here is a non-issue

Helsingør is a coastal town with full 4G and 5G. Average 4G speed is around 90 Mbps and 5G around 130 Mbps — both above Denmark's already high baseline. Any of the major carriers works. There are no dead zones a visitor will encounter.

So if your question is "will my phone work in Helsingør", the answer is yes, comprehensively, and you can stop reading. The reason this page exists is the boat.

The Sweden problem

Helsingør is the shortest crossing between Denmark and Sweden — a 20-minute ferry to Helsingborg. Enormous numbers of visitors do it as a half-day add-on to a Copenhagen trip, often without thinking of it as entering a different country.

Your phone thinks of it as entering a different country. Somewhere mid-channel it will hand over to a Swedish network, and what happens next depends entirely on what you are carrying:

• An EU or EEA SIM from home. Roam-like-at-home covers both sides. Nothing happens, nothing costs extra, subject to your operator's fair-use cap.
• A Denmark-only travel eSIM. It stops working when you land in Sweden. Not slowly, not expensively — it simply has no Swedish coverage to attach to.
• A Europe regional eSIM. Covers both. This is what you want if the ferry is on your itinerary.
• A non-EU home SIM roaming internationally. Two separate countries, two sets of roaming charges. Check your rates before you board.

We do not hold verified pricing for Europe-wide regional plans, so we are not going to quote you a figure for one. What we can say is that the choice needs making before you buy, not on the quayside — a Denmark eSIM cannot be extended into Sweden after the fact.

Where to buy, which is to say: not here

There is no dedicated SIM shop in Helsingør. This is a day-trip town, and the retail assumes you arrived already connected.

Buy in Copenhagen. That means either a Danish prepaid SIM — around $13, passport required for registration — from a carrier store or a Copenhagen Airport outlet, or, more sensibly for a day trip, an eSIM installed before you left home. The cheapest Denmark entry points are Saily at $3.99 for 1GB over 7 days and Airalo at $4.00 for 1GB over 3 days, the latter read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026. For a single day in Helsingør, 1GB is genuinely enough, because you are navigating and checking ferry times rather than working.

If you have already bought a Denmark plan for a longer trip, use that. Buying a second SIM for one day in Helsingør makes no sense; buying a regional plan instead of a Denmark plan, before the trip starts, does.

Timing your visit

June to August brings heavy day-tripper volumes out of Copenhagen — the same trains, the same ferry, the same few hours. The Christmas market is the other peak. Neither breaks the network, but both mean the ferry terminal and the town centre are crowded, and crowded is when people most want a working phone to find each other.
