The one part of Denmark where coverage is a real question

Denmark reached 100% population coverage for 4G and 5G, which is a global benchmark and which makes most Danish coverage advice boring in a useful way. Bornholm is the exception worth writing about.

4G across the island's main tourist areas is good, averaging around 45 Mbps — the lowest figure of any Danish region we track, against a national average nearer 104 Mbps. 5G is being rolled out but remains patchy on the eastern coast. TDC and Telenor perform best on the island; Telenor shares tower infrastructure with Telia under the TT-Network arrangement, so a plan riding either of those two draws on the same masts.

Where it actually fails:

• Hammeren, the rocky wilderness at the northern tip
• Steep coastal cliff trail sections, where the terrain itself blocks signal
• Interior forest areas away from the villages

In the villages and along the main roads, signal is reliable. It is the edges that go quiet.

Why this matters for the way people travel here

Bornholm markets itself as the Sunshine Island and functions as a slow-travel, artisan-food destination. In practice that means cycling: the island is crisscrossed by roughly 200km of bike paths, and a large share of visitors spend their days on them.

That is exactly the use case where a live map is least reliable and most needed. The routes that lose signal — cliff sections, the northern tip, forest interiors — are the routes people cycle for the scenery. Download your cycling maps for offline use before you set out, every day, not once at the start of the trip. This is not a precaution against a bad SIM choice; no SIM fixes a granite cliff.

Getting connected before you arrive

Bornholm Airport (RNN) has no SIM counter. Neither does anywhere else on the island reliably stock what a visitor needs. Buy in Copenhagen before you fly, or install an eSIM before departure so it activates when you land.

Airalo figures were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026. Saily prices were read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. An earlier version of this table put Nomad's 5 GB at $9, below Airalo's; that number had never been checked and was wrong.

For a week on Bornholm, a 3GB or 5GB 30-day plan is the sensible bracket. You will use less data than you would in a city — there is less to look up, and offline maps carry the cycling days — but you want enough headroom that you are not rationing when you do have signal. A Danish local SIM is an option at around $13, though it requires passport registration and you would need to buy it in Copenhagen anyway.

Seasons

July and August are very busy. Autumn brings the harvest festival. From November to March the island is very quiet, which changes the calculation in one specific way: fewer people means less network contention, but it also means fewer open businesses whose wifi you can fall back on if your plan runs dry.
