Why connectivity matters more here than in most small towns

Billund would be an unremarkable Jutland town were it not the home of the original LEGO theme park, which is the most visited attraction in Denmark outside Copenhagen. The reason that turns into a data question is the park's own app: live ride queue times and augmented-reality builds both need a working connection, and both get used constantly across a full day with children.

The good news is that the park is well covered throughout. Signal inside LEGOLAND is strong, and there are no notable dead zones in either the park or the town. Billund town averages around 55 Mbps on 4G, with 5G reaching roughly 280 Mbps in covered areas. TDC is the best carrier locally.

That 55 Mbps is the lowest figure of Denmark's main tourist towns, against a national average nearer 104 Mbps — but a theme park app checking queue times does not need 100 Mbps. It needs a connection that does not drop while you are standing in a crowd of several thousand people, and Billund's does not.

What you can and cannot buy in Billund

There are no dedicated carrier stores in Billund. That is the flat answer. If you want a Danish SIM from an actual operator shop, you are buying it in Copenhagen or Aarhus.

Billund Airport (BLL) itself does have a 7-Eleven kiosk that sells starter packs, with a peak queue of around five minutes. So it is not nothing — but the selection is limited, you will need your passport for registration, and a Danish prepaid SIM runs around $13 at airport prices. Family groups landing at BLL and heading straight to a hotel usually do not want to spend the arrival window at a kiosk.

The practical recommendation is to arrive with an eSIM already installed.

Plan sizes that fit a park trip

Airalo prices above were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026, Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026 and Saily's from its own on 18 August 2026. Saily's 3GB month used to appear here at $8.99, a figure nobody had read off Saily. An earlier version of this table understated Nomad's 5 GB; that number had never been checked.

A point families miss: one eSIM covers one phone. If two adults both want data, you either buy two plans or you buy one plan on a device that can hotspot the other. On the 5GB/30-day tier that is the difference between $11 and $22, which is worth deciding before you are at the gates.

If Billund is one leg of a Copenhagen–LEGOLAND–Aarhus family trip, a single 5GB or 10GB 30-day Denmark plan covers the whole route and works out far cheaper per gigabyte than short top-ups bought as you go.

When to go, and what that changes

LEGOLAND opens from late March through October. July and August draw the largest crowds, which is when the queue-time function in the app is most useful and also when the most people are simultaneously refreshing it. Coverage in the park holds up, but if you are visiting in peak season, do not buy the absolute minimum data — an app checking live queues all day, plus photos, plus navigation, adds up faster than a single gigabyte.
