Aarhus is not a coverage problem

Denmark reached 100% population coverage for both 4G and 5G, and Aarhus sits comfortably inside that. Average 4G speed in the city is around 70 Mbps, with 5G reaching about 380 Mbps where it is available. There are no notable dead zones. The ARoS museum area and the Latin Quarter — the two places you are most likely to be standing while looking something up — are both well covered.

Worth noting for expectation-setting: 70 Mbps is below Denmark's national average of around 104 Mbps. That is not a fault in Aarhus, it is what happens when a national figure is pulled up by dense Copenhagen infrastructure. At 70 Mbps nothing you do as a visitor will feel slow.

TDC and Telia are the strongest carriers here. Telia leads on 5G speed and availability; TDC has the longest-established rural reach from its former state-monopoly infrastructure, which matters more on day trips out of the city than in it.

What actually uses your data here

Aarhus is a heavier data city than its size suggests, because the things people come for are the things that eat a connection. ARoS and its rooftop rainbow panorama, Moesgaard's Viking galleries, and the reconstructed streets of the old town all get photographed relentlessly and uploaded immediately. Add live navigation between them and a week of ordinary sightseeing runs through more than you would expect.

Two apps are worth installing before you arrive: Midttrafik for local buses and light rail, and Google Maps with the Aarhus area saved offline as a fallback.

Buying a SIM: do it before you get here

Aarhus Airport (AAR) is small and has no SIM counters. If you are flying in there, arrive with an eSIM already installed and activated, or you will be relying on airport wifi until you reach the city centre. TDC and Telia both have stores in central Aarhus if you would rather buy local once you are in town, though a Danish prepaid SIM requires a passport for registration and costs around $13 at airport pricing.

For most visitors the eSIM is the simpler answer, because it removes the registration step entirely:

If Aarhus is one stop on a Copenhagen–Aarhus–Odense circuit, buy the 30-day plan rather than three short ones. The 5GB/30-day plans work out far better per gigabyte than stacking 1GB top-ups, and Denmark is small enough that a single national plan covers the whole route.

Timing

Two events reshape the city. NorthSide Festival lands in June and Aarhus Festival runs from late August into September. Both bring visitor spikes, which is worth knowing for accommodation and for the practical reality that busy sites strain local cells — not to the point of failure here, but enough that you may want a little headroom on your data plan rather than the bare minimum.
