SIM cards at Split Airport (SPU)

The queue here is seasonal, and the season is when you are coming

Split Airport has HT and A1 selling SIMs in arrivals. Both are real counters and the SIMs are real; the problem is arithmetic. From June to September, queues at the SPU SIM counters run past twenty minutes. Outside those months the same counters clear in about five.

That is a wide spread, and it lands badly: Split's arrivals are overwhelmingly summer arrivals. Most people who want a SIM at SPU want it in exactly the window when it costs the most time to get one. A passport is required for registration, so add the paperwork to the twenty minutes.

If you land in October or April, none of this matters much. Five minutes is nothing, and buying at the counter is a reasonable thing to do.

Before you queue, check what you already have

Croatia is in the EU. Home plans from any EU or EEA country roam here at domestic rates, which means a large share of the summer arrivals at Split are queueing for data they already own. There is no purchase, no registration and no cost — data roaming on, and done.

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is the reason we would not tell most readers to plan around SPU's counters at all.

What twenty minutes is worth

A Croatian local SIM at an airport counter runs about $11, which is not an outrageous price. What you pay on top is the wait and the passport scan, and in July that is a real cost when a ferry or a car hire desk is also waiting.

Read to the bottom of that before deciding. Croatia's market runs to 50 GB and the top tier is the cheapest per gigabyte in it — $35 for 30 days is $0.70 a gigabyte, verified on Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. The 1 GB entry plan costs four dollars a gigabyte, six times the rate.

Unlimited exists as well: Airalo sells unlimited for 7 days at $25, verified, and Holafly lists 5 days at $19 on an indicative figure we have not confirmed. For a week of island photos going straight to a cloud backup, unlimited is defensible. For maps and messaging it is money thrown away.

The ferries, not the airport, are the real coverage question

What catches people out in Split is not the terminal. It is the channel crossings to Hvar and Brač, where signal thins out mid-passage. No plan bought at the airport changes that; downloading your accommodation details and ferry times before boarding does. The Split city page covers where coverage holds and where it drops.

Worth saying because it reframes the airport decision: connectivity in Split is not something you solve at a counter, and rushing the purchase in a twenty-minute queue solves nothing you will actually run into.

What we do not hold

We have no opening hours for the SPU counters, no location within arrivals, and no detail on what the operators' tourist packages include or cost beyond the general airport local-SIM figure. Late arrivals should not assume staffed counters.

On networks, we are short. Airalo does not publish which Croatian operator carries its Croatia plans, and "Cronet" at its checkout is a product name rather than an operator.
