Varna: the coast is covered, the crowd is the variable

Coverage on the coast

Varna is Bulgaria's summer beach capital, and the resorts north of it — Golden Sands and Albena — pull in tourists from across Europe. Signal is good in the city and along the Black Sea coast, and the resort areas themselves are well covered. This is not a place where you arrive and struggle to get online.

The gaps are where you would expect them on a coastline rather than in a city: some of the deep cliff sections along the Black Sea drop out, as do the remoter beach paths north of Golden Sands. If a day's plan involves walking away from the resorts along the shore, that is the stretch to have your map cached for.

Summer is a different network

July and August bring extreme tourist numbers to this coast. Varna Airport takes charter flights from across Europe through the season, and the beach clubs at Golden Sands generate a lot of evening traffic — the DJ nights are when congestion is most noticeable, and they are also when everyone is uploading. Social posting from the beach clubs is a genuine driver of data demand here in a way it is not in Sofia.

Two practical consequences. First, buy more data than a city break would need: video and photo uploads eat several times what maps and messaging do. Second, if you are landing in season, sort connectivity before you fly. Varna Airport has SIM counters, but they queue in summer, and standing in one after a charter flight is a poor use of the first hour of a beach holiday.

What to buy

Check your own contract first. Bulgaria is in the EU, so an EU or EEA plan roams here on your domestic allowance under roam-like-at-home rules — which covers a large share of the Europeans who fill these resorts every summer. If that is you, there is nothing to buy.

For everyone else, Bulgaria is cheap. Verified rows below were read from the provider's own site on 13 August 2026; the Saily row is an indicative figure we hold but have not confirmed.

A 1 GB week is the wrong shape for a beach holiday — it is the plan you finish on day three and then top up expensively. For a week at Golden Sands with the phone out most of the day, 10 GB at $11.50 is a better starting point, and a fortnight of it justifies the 20 GB month at $20. The 50 GB month at $36 is the cheapest per-gigabyte rate we hold for Bulgaria at $0.72, so read to the bottom of the ladder before assuming the small plans are the economical ones. Airalo also sells verified unlimited plans — $18.50 for five days, $27 for seven — which suit a short trip where you would rather not think about it.

Buying in Varna

Bulgaria requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, so a local purchase means a counter and a few minutes of paperwork. Vivacom and A1 both have stores in the Varna city centre, which is the better option than the airport if you have the time. Our figure for a Bulgarian airport SIM is about $9, though we do not hold what data comes with it.

On networks: Airalo does not publish which Bulgarian operator its plans use — "Bultel" is its own product name at checkout, not a carrier. Saily and Nomad publish nothing either, and Holafly's listing is unconfirmed, so we will not print it as fact.
