Getting online in Bansko

The town is well served. The mountain above it is not.

Bansko town has good 4G and the main pistes have coverage. Past that it thins out quickly. Our data lists two dead zones for this resort: remote Pirin Mountains hiking trails above 2,000 m, and off-piste areas away from the marked runs. Hiking in the Pirin above the ski area is patchy rather than reliably covered.

That split is the whole story here. If your trip is lifts, marked runs, restaurants and the town, connectivity is a non-issue. If it involves ski touring, backcountry, or summer hiking deeper into the Pirin between June and September, plan for stretches with no signal and download your maps first.

22 Mbps, and why it is lower than you would guess

The average 4G speed measured in Bansko is 22 Mbps. Bulgaria's national average is 38 Mbps, and 5G is live in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas — Bansko is not on that list. So the resort runs at roughly 60% of the national 4G average with no 5G layer above it.

22 Mbps is entirely adequate for maps, the Bansko resort app, messaging and a video call from your apartment. It is less comfortable when a full chalet tries to stream in the evening on a shared connection. If you are travelling with a group and expect to lean on mobile data rather than the accommodation's WiFi, buy more headroom than you think you need.

August is the odd one out. Bansko Jazz Festival fills a ski town in summer, which is unusual enough that it is worth flagging: expect the same network serving a much larger crowd than a normal August week.

Vivacom is the carrier that matters up here

Vivacom is listed as the best carrier in Bansko specifically, on the strength of having the best Bulgarian mountain coverage. Nationally it also has the fastest 4G and 5G data speeds and broad coverage, with A1 Bulgaria close behind — both are rated excellent for tourists.

For eSIM buyers this is mostly good news, because you are rarely picking one network. Holafly's Bulgaria plans name no network — the A1, Vivacom and Yettel listing this page used to carry came from our own data rather than from the seller. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish nothing: Airalo sells its Bulgaria eSIM under the package name Bultel, which is its own branding rather than a network, and an earlier version of this page put Saily and Nomad on A1 and Vivacom, which was an error in our data. So in mountain terrain, where one operator's mast may be shadowed by a ridge that another's is not, no travel eSIM will tell you what you are falling back on.

There is no airport here, so buy earlier

Bansko has no airport of its own. Visitors arrive via Sofia Airport, then roughly a three-hour drive or bus. Sofia Airport Terminal 2 arrivals has Vivacom and A1 stores, which is the practical place to buy a physical SIM if you want one. A Bulgarian prepaid SIM runs about $9 at the airport and requires a passport or ID for registration.

There is a Vivacom partner shop in Bansko town, but a partner shop is not a full carrier store and we do not hold its opening hours — do not plan around it arriving late on a Sunday in December.

If you hold an EU or EEA contract, the simplest answer is to buy nothing. Bulgaria is inside the EU roaming area, so your domestic allowance travels with you subject to your operator's fair-use cap. What a ski week actually costs

Ski season runs December to March; summer hiking June to September. For a week, these are the plans worth comparing.

Airalo's rows above were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; an earlier version of this table had Nomad's 10 GB month at $14, which nobody had checked. The Saily and Holafly figures were read off their own sites on 18 August 2026, which halved Saily's 1 GB from the $3.99 this page used to print. For a weekend on the slopes, Saily's $1.99 1 GB plan is enough for lift maps and messages. For a full week with evening streaming, Airalo's 10 GB at $11 is the better arithmetic — and it undercuts Holafly's five-day unlimited by $8.
