Sofia: good coverage, and some of Europe's cheapest data

The city, briefly

Sofia surprises visitors who expect a grim post-Soviet capital. Roman ruins sit beneath the centre — the Serdica complex is visible through the glass floors of the metro — and Byzantine, Ottoman and Soviet-era architecture stand within walking distance of one another. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the NDK and the Vitosha Boulevard shopping area all have excellent connectivity, so the sightseeing core is not where you will have trouble.

The one local quirk worth naming is the metro. Sofia's system is still expanding and signal in the tunnels has been improving as it does, but it is the part of the city where a connection is least dependable. Download your map before you go down rather than after.

On speed, Vivacom is generally regarded as the fastest network in Sofia. That is a statement about the Bulgarian operator, not about any travel eSIM — see the last section for why the distinction matters.

Check whether you need to buy at all

Bulgaria is in the EU. An EU or EEA phone contract roams here on your domestic allowance under roam-like-at-home rules, subject to your operator's fair-use cap. For a lot of visitors that ends the question before it starts. If your contract is British, American or from outside Europe, read on.

Prices: this is a cheap market

Bulgaria is one of the better-value markets in Europe, which is worth stating plainly because an earlier version of this page said the opposite. It quoted a floor of $1.35 a gigabyte and told readers Bulgaria was the worst market in EU Europe. Both were wrong. Verified rows below were read from the provider's own site, Airalo's on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's on 17 August 2026; only the Saily rows are indicative figures we hold but have not confirmed. The Nomad 10 GB row appeared here at $14 before anyone checked it; the real price is $16.

The floor is $0.72 a gigabyte, at the top of the ladder rather than the bottom, and even the mid-size rows sit at or under $1.20. For a few days in Sofia you do not need to think hard: $5 buys a verified 3 GB for a week and $7 buys 5 GB for a month. If you are staying longer or working from here, the 20 GB month at $20 is the sensible middle, and the 50 GB at $36 is the best rate in the country.

Unlimited plans exist too — Airalo has a verified unlimited 3-day at $11.50 — but at these metered prices they are hard to justify unless you are tethering.

Buying locally

Bulgaria requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, so this is a counter transaction rather than a kiosk one. Vivacom, A1 Bulgaria and Yettel Bulgaria are the three operators, all with stores in central Sofia. Our figure for a SIM bought at the airport is around $9. We do not hold what data that includes, so we cannot tell you whether it beats the $5 eSIM row above — and we would rather say so than guess.

Bolt is the standard rideshare in Sofia, and it needs a live connection at the moment you want a car.

What we cannot tell you about networks

Airalo does not publish which Bulgarian network its plans use. "Bultel" is the name on its checkout page — a product, not an operator. Saily and Nomad publish no Bulgarian host network either, and the listings our data once carried against them were errors on our side. Holafly points at none either: the Bulgarian operators our data once carried against its rows came from our own older text rather than from Holafly, whose country pages name no carrier.
