Buying a SIM card at Varna Airport

Two carriers in arrivals, and a season that decides the wait

Varna's arrivals hall has Vivacom and A1. That is the whole list on our record — two of the country's three operators, with no third-party kiosk and no vending fallback noted.

The queue is 12 minutes at peak and 3 off-peak, and at Varna that spread is seasonal rather than daily. Our record specifically flags July and August as the peak, which is exactly when the Black Sea coast fills up and the charter flights land in banks. A 3-minute queue in April and a 12-minute one in August are the same two counters dealing with very different numbers of people.

We hold no opening hours for either counter. For a summer airport that runs late charters, that gap matters — treat an evening arrival as uncertain.

Your passport comes out

Bulgaria requires ID for SIM registration. Every purchase is written against a document, which is why 12 minutes for two counters is plausible: it is not just payment, it is paperwork.

The upside is that the counters are cheap. Our country record puts a typical Bulgarian airport SIM at about $9 — the lowest airport figure of any country in this batch, and roughly half what a UK airport bundle costs. If you want a Bulgarian number and a physical SIM, Varna is not a rip-off.

Most people getting off those charter flights need nothing

Bulgaria is in the EU. Arrivals from another EU or EEA country roam here at domestic rates under roam-like-at-home, and a large share of Varna's summer traffic is exactly that — package and charter flights from within the zone.

If that is you, the correct move in arrivals is to walk past both counters. Check your fair-use data allowance before you fly, because a fortnight of maps, photos and video on a coastal holiday is where those caps get tested, and top-ups bought abroad are the expensive kind.

The price correction that matters

An earlier version of our Bulgarian pages quoted a floor of $1.35 a gigabyte and described the country as one of the worst-value markets in EU Europe. Both were wrong. Bulgaria is mid-table, and the real floor is $0.72.

These prices were read from the provider's own Bulgarian checkout on 13 August 2026, in US dollars.

The pattern is the one that keeps catching writers out: the cheapest gigabyte is on the largest plan, not the smallest. Fifty gigabytes for 30 days at $36 is less than half the per-gigabyte rate of the 10 GB plan, and a third of the 3 GB one. Read the whole ladder before deciding the small plan is the sensible one.

Which network, and how confident we are

No provider publishes anything about the host network here. Earlier versions of this page said Holafly listed A1, Vivacom and Yettel and that Saily and Nomad listed operators too; all of those entries came from our own data rather than from the sellers' listings, and not one of the four names a carrier in any country.

Holafly's listing is its own unconfirmed claim. Nobody has read it off the operator's side, and we would not build a recommendation on it. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish nothing at all, in Bulgaria or anywhere else.

If being on one specific Bulgarian network matters to you — for the interior, or for the coast out of season — the counters in arrivals are the only place you can be certain what you are buying, because you are buying from the operator itself.

Verdict for Varna

EU arrival: buy nothing. Everyone else: an eSIM installed before departure is cheaper per gigabyte than anything at the counter, and skips the passport and the August queue. Free wi-fi is generally available at the airport if you would rather install after landing.

The one case for the counter is a Bulgarian number, a chosen network, or a phone with no eSIM support — and at about $9, that case is cheaper here than at most airports. Full prices are on our Bulgaria hub.
