Bulgarian SIM or travel eSIM: which is worth buying

Bulgaria is inside the EU roaming area. If your contract was issued anywhere in the EU or EEA, your domestic data allowance works here at no extra charge, subject to your operator's fair-use cap. That covers a large share of the people who visit, and for them the correct purchase is nothing at all.

Three groups still need to buy. Non-European visitors, who get no roaming benefit. UK contract holders, because operators split on whether EU roaming still costs extra after Brexit. And anyone staying long enough that fair-use caps start to bite — EU roaming rules are written for holidays, not for a season in Bansko.

If you are in one of those groups, read on. If you are not, the rest of this page will save you money by telling you not to spend any.

The local SIM: cheap, but you pay in paperwork

Three national carriers sell prepaid: Vivacom, A1 Bulgaria and Yettel Bulgaria. An airport SIM runs about $9. Registration requires a passport or ID — there is no anonymous purchase in Bulgaria, which is the single biggest practical difference from an eSIM.

One honest limitation: we hold the $9 price but not the data allowance that comes with it, so we cannot give you a per-GB figure for the local option. Anyone who tells you a Bulgarian tourist SIM is definitively cheaper or dearer per gigabyte than an eSIM is guessing. What we can say is that the local route costs more up front than the cheapest eSIM, requires ID, and requires you to be somewhere a shop is open.

The eSIM numbers, in full

Airalo's Bulgaria rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; the earlier Nomad figure of $14 for 10 GB had never been checked and was too low. Saily and Holafly figures are indicative.

The spread is the point. The cheapest entry plan costs $4.00 per gigabyte; the largest costs $0.72. That is a 5.5x difference in the price of the same commodity from the same provider. Buying small and topping up repeatedly is the most expensive way to use data in Bulgaria.

Unlimited only makes sense at the top end of usage. Holafly's ten-day unlimited at $36.90 costs more than Airalo's 50 GB for a month at $36.00, and Holafly does not support hotspot. If you need to tether a laptop, that alone decides it.

Which network you actually get

Vivacom has the fastest 4G and 5G data speeds and broad nationwide coverage; A1 Bulgaria is competitive, and both are rated excellent for visitors. 5G is live in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas. The national average is 38 Mbps.

Nobody says anything about the network. Holafly, Airalo, Saily and Nomad all publish nothing — the A1, Vivacom and Yettel listing this page used to credit to Holafly came from our own data rather than from the seller, an earlier version put Saily and Nomad on A1 and Vivacom in the same way, and Airalo's Bulgaria eSIM is sold under the package name Bultel, which is branding rather than an operator. That matters in Bulgaria, because the coverage gaps are terrain-driven: remote Rhodope hiking trails, the Rila Mountains above the ski resort bases including the Musala summit area, some deep Black Sea coastal cliffs, and rural villages in the northwest.

For those areas a local Vivacom SIM remains the widest-coverage option, and it is the only route where you know what you are buying. Everywhere a tourist normally goes, any eSIM will do.

The verdict

Short trip, no EU contract: an eSIM. It is cheaper than $9, it needs no passport, and it works the moment you land. Two weeks or more, or travel into the Rhodopes and rural northwest: the local Vivacom SIM earns its ID paperwork. EU or EEA contract on a normal holiday: buy nothing.
