Salzburg — two things change here, and both are seasonal or spatial

If you have an EU contract, stop reading

Austria is in the EU, so an EU or EEA phone plan roams here at your domestic rate. Buy nothing. Salzburg's visitors skew heavily European and this applies to most of them. What follows matters if you are arriving from outside that zone, or on a contract without EU roaming included.

Festival season slows the Old Town

The Salzburg Festival runs through July and August and brings a large international classical music audience into a small historic centre. During peak performances the network in the Altstadt can slow significantly. That is congestion, not coverage — the towers are there, but so are several thousand people using them at once, in an area you can walk across in fifteen minutes.

The fix is unglamorous and works: download venue maps and save ticket confirmations to your phone before you set out for an event. Screenshots of a QR code beat a spinning loader at the door. Outside performance times the centre behaves normally.

If you are covering the Festival rather than attending it — uploading photographs or video daily — an unmetered plan is a reasonable hedge against a congested week. The German border, twenty minutes away

Salzburg sits close enough to Germany that a Berchtesgaden day trip is standard, and phones near the border can switch between Austrian and German networks without you touching anything. On an EU or EEA contract that is invisible — the same roam-like-at-home rules apply on both sides.

On a travel eSIM it is worth a check before you go. A plan sold for Austria alone covers Austria alone; if your handset registers on a German tower, an Austria-only plan has nothing to offer it. Look at whether what you bought is a single-country or a Europe-wide product before the day trip, not on the bus.

Buy your SIM here if Hallstatt is on the list

Salzburg is the practical buying point for a good part of the Salzkammergut. Hallstatt, about 50km away, has no carrier stores at all, so anyone wanting a physical SIM for that trip should get it in the city first. Austria requires a passport or ID for registration, and airport tourist packages at Salzburg Airport run around $15 — more than several verified eSIM plans cost for a fortnight.

The numbers

Read the top of that ladder before deciding: the 50GB over 30 days is the cheapest data per gigabyte anywhere in the Austrian list we hold, and the small plans are the expensive ones — the 1GB over three days at $4 costs about seven times as much per gigabyte.

Airalo sells two Austrian products, Servus Austria and Servus Austria+, so most sizes appear twice at different prices: the 20GB over 15 days is $14.50 as Servus Austria and $15.50 as Servus Austria+. Our data does not say what the dearer one includes, and we are not going to invent a reason to pay it.

At the small end, Saily goes lower still — 3GB over 30 days at $5.99, 5GB over 30 days at $7.99 — and those figures have now been read off Saily's own site. They used to appear here as $6.99 and $10.99, neither of which Saily charges.

Which network you land on

Not published, by anyone selling here. Airalo, Saily and Nomad give no host network for Austria, and Holafly gives none either — when we read its Austrian prices off its own site on 18 August 2026 we found it names no carrier for Austria or for any other country. An earlier version of this page said Holafly's listing pointed at A1, Magenta and Drei; that came from our own data rather than from Holafly, and we have withdrawn it rather than hedge it.
