Hallstatt — 800 residents, no carrier shops, decent signal

Most people reading this should buy nothing at all

Austria is in the EU, so if your contract is an EU or EEA one, your data works here at your domestic rate under roam-like-at-home. That covers a large share of Hallstatt's visitors, and no eSIM will improve on free. The rest of this page is for everyone else — arrivals from outside Europe, mainly, on a day trip or a one-night stop.

The village is fine. Getting a SIM in it is not.

Hallstatt has around 800 permanent residents and takes thousands of visitors a day through summer and the shoulder season. Signal in the village itself is reliable, better than the setting would lead you to expect, and for the lakefront, the square and the paths through the centre you will not think about it.

What the village does not have is a carrier store. There is nowhere in Hallstatt to walk in and buy a prepaid SIM. If you want a physical one, buy it in Salzburg — about 50km away and the usual jumping-off point — or in Vienna before you set out. Austria requires a passport or ID for registration wherever you buy, and airport tourist packages run around $15.

An eSIM installed before you travel avoids the whole errand, which is the main argument for one here.

Two places the signal goes

The salt mine cable car has no signal inside it. The lake ferry crossing is variable. Neither is long enough to matter if you are not relying on your phone mid-journey, but both are worth knowing before you plan to look something up on the way.

Download an offline map of the village before you arrive. The paths are simple and hard to get wrong — this is about removing the last bit of uncertainty rather than avoiding a real risk of getting lost.

What a day trip actually needs

Very little. A day in Hallstatt is photographs, a map and a train or bus time; the smallest plan on the shelf covers it.
