Zell am See and Kaprun — plan for the signal to run out

The town is fine. The mountain is not.

Zell am See and Kaprun sit at the foot of a ski region where mobile coverage falls away with altitude, and that one fact should shape what you buy and what you download.

In the resort town itself 4G is good — around 28 Mbps on average. That is well under the Austrian national average of 48 Mbps, but it is plenty for maps, messaging and streaming in a hotel room. On the slopes it becomes patchy. Above 3,000m the signal is minimal, and the top of the Kitzsteinhorn at 3,029m is a known dead zone. Off-piste runs and hiking routes above roughly 2,200m are unreliable as well.

The pattern does not change with the season. Kitzsteinhorn is one of the few places in the Alps with summer glacier skiing, and the ski season runs November to April while the hiking season runs June to September — but the altitude problem is the same in August as it is in January.

A1 is the network that matters here

A1 has the broadest rural and alpine valley coverage in Austria, at over 99% of the population on 4G, and it is the carrier we would pick for ski areas and countryside driving. Magenta and Drei are excellent in Austrian cities, which is a different problem from this one.

That matters for eSIMs, because a travel eSIM is only ever as good as the network underneath it — and most providers, Airalo included, do not publish which Austrian network their plans actually use. We hold no verified host carrier for them. If coverage on the valley roads and the lower slopes is the thing you cannot compromise on, a local A1 SIM is the only way to be certain which network you are on.

Download before you get on the lift

The failure point here is predictable, which means the fix is too. Before you go up:

• Ski Amadé, for the region's lifts and pistes
• Google Maps with the valley saved offline, for the drive and the town
• Lift passes, hotel address and anything else you would otherwise need to load on the mountain

Lodge wifi is common through the ski season, so the gaps tend to be while you are actually moving rather than while you are sitting down. That is manageable if you have prepared and irritating if you have not.

Buying: Salzburg Airport, or the town

Austria is in the EU, so if your contract is an EU or EEA one your roaming is included at your domestic rate and you should buy nothing.

Otherwise, install an eSIM before you travel. If you would rather hold a physical SIM, Salzburg Airport is the practical place to get one — Zell am See is about a 90-minute drive from SZG, and the local option is an A1 partner shop in the town centre. A passport is required for registration anywhere in Austria, and airport tourist packages run around $15.

How much data a ski week actually needs

The verified prices were read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026. One substitution is worth making: an earlier version of this page gave Nomad's 10GB over thirty days as an unverified sixteen dollars. It has since been read off Nomad's own site and is $14 — cheaper than we said, but still three dollars above the Airalo equivalent at $11.00 for the same allowance over the same month.

And resist buying big. Patchy coverage cuts both ways — on a full day on the mountain your phone spends hours unable to do much at all, so consumption here runs lower than it would in a city. Twenty gigabytes for a ski week is money left on the table.
