Buying a SIM card at Graz Airport

Start here: do you need anything?

Austria is in the EU and the EEA, so roam-like-at-home applies. If you flew into Graz from Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Ireland or anywhere else in the bloc, your domestic plan works here at domestic rates and there is nothing to buy. Given where Graz's flights come from, that covers most people reading this page.

The exceptions worth checking: your home operator's fair-use data cap for roaming, which is a real limit on some cheap bundles, and post-Brexit UK plans, some of which reinstated European roaming charges. Both are worth a two-minute look at your own operator's terms before you assume anything.

Everybody else — arrivals from the UK on a plan without EU roaming, from Switzerland, the US, Asia, Australia — needs a plan, and this page is for you.

What is actually at GRZ

Graz is a small airport and our data on it is correspondingly thin. What we hold: A1 Telekom Austria is available in arrivals, the queue is about eight minutes at peak and two off-peak, a passport is required for SIM registration, and free WiFi is generally available in the terminal. Public transport and taxis connect the airport to the city, which is only a few kilometres away.

One detail from the source is worth repeating because it changes the calculation: the counter is only open around arrival times. It is not a permanently staffed shop. If your flight is delayed, or you are connecting, or you come back out to the airport later hoping to sort it out, you may find nothing open. We do not hold the specific hours, so we cannot tell you which arrivals are covered.

We hold no shop name and no unit number for GRZ, and we are not going to invent either.

The prices, which are among the best in our dataset

Austria is the second-cheapest country we cover for mobile data, behind Thailand. These are read directly from Airalo's own site:

$0.58 per gigabyte is the second-lowest verified rate anywhere in our data — cheaper than the UK at $0.78, cheaper than Spain at $0.70, and beaten only by Thailand, where a verified 50 GB plan runs $12 for ten days — 24 cents a gigabyte. Fifty gigabytes for $29 is more data than most month-long trips consume.

Airalo sells two tiers here. The cheaper is Servus Austria; Servus Austria+ costs more at every size, $36.50 against $29 for the 50 GB month and $14.50 against $11 for 10 GB. We hold nothing describing what the premium buys, so we will not tell you it is faster or better. If Airalo's checkout does not make the difference clear, take the cheaper.

Nomad's Austria prices are verified too, read on 17 August 2026, and they all sit above Airalo's: $14 for 10 GB over 30 days, $19 for 20 GB and $45 for 50 GB. An earlier version of this page had Nomad's 50 GB month down at $29, level with Airalo's; that figure was never read off Nomad and was wrong by $16. Saily's Austria prices are now checked: 1 GB for 7 days at $1.99 and 20 GB for 30 days at $15.99, read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. We had that 20 GB month down at $26.99, which Saily has never charged. Holafly's unlimited plans, from $20.50 for 5 days, have since been verified.

Against all that, a local SIM at an Austrian airport typically costs around $15, with an allowance we do not hold, bought after handing over a passport. At Austrian prices, it is hard to see the case.

Networks

Nobody publishes anything. Holafly used to appear here for A1, Magenta and Drei; that came from our own data, and Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Saily, Airalo and Nomad publish no host network for Austria at all — Servus Austria is an Airalo product name, not a carrier.

Buying A1's own SIM at the counter is the only way to know which network you are on. In a country this well covered, that is rarely the deciding factor.

Verdict

If you are from the EU or EEA, buy nothing. If you are not, buy an eSIM before you fly — the counter at Graz may not even be open when you land, and $29 for 50 GB beats anything you will be offered at it. Full plan list on our Austria hub.
