Salzburg Airport (SZG): a single A1 desk that may not be staffed

What is actually in arrivals

One carrier sells SIMs at Salzburg Airport: A1 Telekom Austria. Magenta Telekom and Drei, the other two Austrian networks, are not represented here — you get the choice A1 offers on the day and no other.

SZG is a small airport, and the practical consequence is that the A1 counter may not always be staffed. That is the single most useful thing on this page: it is not a queue problem, it is a whether-anyone-is-there problem, and no arrivals timetable will tell you the answer in advance.

When it is open, the queue is short. Peak runs about ten minutes and off-peak about three — a fraction of Vienna's twenty-minute peak, because the passenger volumes are a fraction too.

Bring your passport. Austria registers prepaid SIMs, so the sale includes an ID check, and that check is most of the ten minutes.

Free WiFi covers the airport, which matters more here than at a big hub: if the counter is shut, you can still buy and install an eSIM standing in the arrivals hall.

Most arrivals should skip the counter regardless

Austria is in the European Union, so roam-like-at-home applies. An EU or EEA SIM works in Salzburg on your domestic allowance at domestic prices, with nothing to buy and nothing to install. Salzburg's traffic is overwhelmingly European, and for most of it the correct action on landing is none at all.

UK travellers should check their own operator, because British networks took different positions on EU roaming after Brexit and several reintroduced charges. Arrivals from outside the EEA are the group that genuinely needs data sorted.

The numbers, for anyone who does need to buy

Airalo sells Austria under two named tiers, Servus Austria and Servus Austria+. The same sizes appear at both: 5 GB over seven days is $7 as Servus Austria and $9 as Servus Austria+. Airalo does not publish what the difference buys, so we cannot tell you — take the cheaper unless you know why you want the other.

Holafly sells unlimited by the day instead, from $20.50 for five days to $73.90 for 30, all verified. It lists no host network at all. This page used to give it A1, Magenta and Drei, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Austria, so if you are buying a travel eSIM here you cannot know in advance whether you will end up on A1's signal or someone else's.

The verdict

On an EU or EEA SIM, do nothing. Otherwise install an eSIM before you fly — it removes the question of whether the A1 desk is manned when your flight lands, and it costs less per gigabyte at every size we can price. If you want a physical Austrian SIM with a local number, the A1 counter is your only option inside the terminal, so have your passport out and a fallback in mind.
