Postojna Cave: two kilometres underground, and nothing works

The short version

Postojna Cave is a complete signal blackout from the moment you enter. The electric train takes you 2km underground and the tour runs 90 minutes across 5.3km of passages. Nothing you buy — no eSIM, no local SIM, no provider — will get you a bar of signal down there, and no page that tells you otherwise is being straight with you.

This is not a problem to solve. It is a cave. Some 21 million visitors since 1819 have managed the tour without connectivity, and the 90 minutes pass quickly.

What to do before you go in

Everything, basically. Coverage in the town of Postojna and around the cave entrance is good, so handle anything that needs a connection above ground.

Two downloads are worth doing in advance rather than in the car park:

• The Postojna Cave app. It works offline and includes maps and information for the cave interior, which is exactly the thing you cannot look up once you are inside.
• Offline maps for the drive. Postojna is about an hour from Ljubljana on the A1 motorway. The drive itself is well covered, but having the route cached costs nothing.

If you are meeting people, agree where before you go down. There is no messaging anyone from inside.

So what should you actually buy?

Nothing for the cave. The question is what you need for the rest of the trip, and for a lot of visitors the answer is still nothing: Slovenia is in the EU, so an EU or EEA contract roams here on your domestic allowance under roam-like-at-home rules.

If you are travelling from outside Europe, a day trip out of Ljubljana is small-data. Airalo's rows below were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; only the Saily row is an indicative figure we hold but have not confirmed.

A 3 GB week at $8 is more than enough for a Postojna day, and the small plans are the right shape for it. The 50 GB month at $42 is included above only because it is the cheapest per-gigabyte rate we hold for Slovenia at $0.84 — relevant if the cave is one stop in a month of travel, irrelevant for an afternoon.

Slovenia requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM. Given that most people visit Postojna as a day trip from Ljubljana or the coast, a counter visit for a local SIM is rarely worth the time.

One last thing to ignore while comparing: Airalo does not publish which Slovenian network its plans use, and "Živjo" is its own checkout name rather than a carrier. Saily and Nomad publish nothing either, and the listing our data holds for Holafly is unconfirmed. It makes no difference here anyway — underground, they are all equally useless.
