Getting online in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is not where you will have trouble

Ljubljana measures 55 Mbps on 4G, against a Slovenian national average of 52. Where 5G is live it is measured at around 230 Mbps. The list of dead zones a tourist will hit is empty. Ljubljana Castle, Prešeren Square and Tivoli Park are all rated excellent, and between them those three cover most of a first visit.

So the useful question here is not which network reaches you. All three Slovenian carriers have 99%+ population coverage, and in the capital they are all fine. The question is how little data you can get away with.

A compact city needs a small plan

Ljubljana has held the European Green Capital title. The Old Town is car-free, the whole centre is walkable end to end, and the cycling infrastructure is genuinely good. The practical effect on your phone bill is that data here is mostly navigation plus the BicikeLJ bike share app, which needs connectivity to release a bike. LPP, the city bus app, is the third one worth installing before you fly.

That is a light load. Maps and a bike app across three or four days is a gigabyte for most people.

Watch the validity column rather than the price. Airalo's 3GB costs $7 with three days of life and $8 with seven; that extra dollar is buying you days, not gigabytes, and a three-day clock on a four-night trip is a wasted purchase. Nomad's 3GB runs thirty days, but it costs $9 — an earlier version of this page put it at $7, level with Airalo's three-day plan, on a figure nobody had read at Nomad's checkout.

If Ljubljana is a base rather than the whole trip — the usual pattern is Ljubljana plus Bled plus the coast — the arithmetic flips towards volume. Nomad's 10GB for 30 days at $16 works out at $1.60 a gigabyte, and Airalo's 10GB for 30 days at $19 is $1.90. Nomad's 20GB month at $20 is better still at a dollar a gigabyte. All are well under half the per-gigabyte rate of any 1GB plan. The Airalo figures carry the Živjo package name in the app.

Buying a physical SIM in town

A1 Slovenija and Telekom Slovenije both have stores in central Ljubljana, and Ljubljana Airport has A1 and Telekom counters in arrivals. We do not hold verified addresses or opening hours for any of them, so we are not going to print any.

A Slovenian prepaid SIM runs around $12 at the airport and requires a passport or national ID to register. There is no way around the registration step. Against $4 for a verified 1GB eSIM that is working before you land, the local SIM only makes sense if you are staying long enough to want a Slovenian number, or if your phone cannot take an eSIM — the eSIM compatibility list settles that in a few seconds.

The airport counters are a reasonable fallback if an eSIM install fails. They are a poor plan A.

The EU question, before you spend anything

Slovenia is in the EU. If your SIM is from any EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home applies and your existing allowance works in Ljubljana at no extra cost, up to your operator's fair-use limit. That covers a large share of the people reading this, and it means the correct spend is zero. UK contracts vary by operator since Brexit and are worth checking before you assume either way.

When the city is busiest

Ljubljana Summer in the City runs June to September, the Open Kitchen food market runs on Fridays from March to November, and the Christmas market runs through December. These are the periods when the centre is most crowded. We have no measurements showing the network degrading during them, so treat this as a note about queues at the SIM counter rather than about coverage.
