Local SIM or travel eSIM in Slovenia?

First, check whether you need to buy anything

Slovenia is in the EU. If your SIM comes from any EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home applies and your normal allowance works here at no extra charge, up to your operator's fair-use limit. For a large share of Slovenia's visitors the right answer to this page is to close it and spend nothing.

UK contracts diverged after Brexit and now vary by operator — some still include Slovenia, some charge a daily fee. Check yours before you assume.

Local SIM: the part we cannot price

A Slovenian prepaid SIM costs around $12 at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, where A1, Telekom and Telemach all have shops in arrivals. There are stores for all three in Ljubljana city centre too. A passport or national ID is required to register, with no way around it.

What we do not hold is Slovenian domestic tariff data — how much a top-up buys, and over how many days. That matters, because the standard advice that a local SIM wins on a long stay rests entirely on per-gigabyte figures we cannot check. If you are here for a month and want to test that claim, price it at the counter yourself. For anything under two weeks the $12 entry cost alone is more than several complete eSIM plans, and that we can check.

Airalo undercuts Holafly on unlimited, at every duration we hold

This is the finding worth the page. Both providers sell unlimited-data Slovenia plans; the Airalo prices below were read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026, the Holafly ones are indicative.

At five days it is 50 cents. At ten days it is $4.90. At the top end Holafly wants $68.90 for 25 days where Airalo wants $69 for 30 — five extra days for a dime. And Holafly does not support hotspot, so if you tether a laptop the comparison stops being close.

The cheapest gigabytes, and the worst ones

The Nomad rows are new here in two senses. Their prices had never been read at Nomad's own checkout before 17 August 2026, and the ones this page carried were wrong: the 3GB month was listed at $7 when it is $9, and the 10GB month at $14 when it is $16. The 20GB and 50GB rows were missing altogether, and the 20GB is the most useful number on the page — $20 against Airalo's $34 for the same allowance over the same month.

The spread across Slovenia's market is close to five to one. Saily's $3.99 is the cheapest way into the country and the most expensive gigabyte on sale; Airalo's 50GB is the cheapest gigabyte and the largest bill. Neither is wrong — a weekend in Ljubljana genuinely does not need 50GB — but it is worth knowing which end of that curve you are buying at.

Two more providers, eSIM Go and eSIMCard, also sell Slovenia. We hold no plan prices for either, so we are not going to rank them, and an earlier version of this page put both on A1 and Telekom on no evidence at all.

Where Slovenian coverage actually fails

All three networks run 99%-plus population coverage and are excellent across the tourist areas, so the failure points are narrow and specific:

• The Triglav summit area, at 2,864m. Dead zones exist at ridge altitude.
• Remote valley hiking trails well away from roads.
• The cave systems at Postojna and Škocjan, which are underground and behave accordingly.

None of these are solved by choosing a different eSIM, because the travel plans all ride the same three networks. If you are walking in the Julian Alps, download your maps before you leave the valley. A1 Slovenija is the market leader on overall coverage and Telekom Slovenije is stronger in rural and eastern Slovenia, which is the one case where a local SIM choice is a real decision rather than a coin toss.
