Buying a SIM card at Kalibo International Airport

What we hold on Kalibo, which is not much

Kalibo is a small regional airport and our data on it is correspondingly thin. Here is all of it.

Smart and Globe are both available to arriving passengers. The queue runs about 10 minutes at peak and 3 off-peak. A passport is required, because Philippine prepaid SIMs have to be registered to an identity document. A local SIM costs around $5, the cheapest local price we hold for any country.

We do not hold the names of the desks, where they sit in the terminal, or what hours they keep. We do not know whether they are staffed for early or late flights. We are not going to pad this page with generic airport advice to cover that — if you need certainty about a counter being open when you land, we cannot give it to you.

The two hours after the terminal are the point

Kalibo is not a destination. It is the airport people use to reach Boracay, and the journey is a two-hour bus and ferry transfer from the terminal to the island.

That transfer is where connectivity actually matters. Ferry terminals, boat departures, a driver to find, someone at the other end expecting you — all of it happens after you have left the only place at Kalibo where you could have bought a SIM. Arriving at a ferry pier with no data and no way of checking anything is the failure mode worth avoiding, and the whole reason to think about this before you fly rather than after you land.

Ten minutes at the counter is not a hardship. Missing the transfer connection because you were in that queue is.

Which network, if you do buy at the desk

Ask for Smart. Our country data credits it with the widest 5G footprint and specifically with strong signal across Boracay, Palawan and Siargao, plus good inter-island coverage. Globe is the stronger network in Metro Manila and Cebu, neither of which is where you are going from Kalibo.

That is a real advantage the counter has over a travel eSIM: you choose the network. With an eSIM you take what the provider gives you.

The prices you are choosing between

Prices were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. The Philippine market does not stop at 20 GB the way some do — the 50 GB plan is the cheapest per gigabyte in the country at $0.96, though nobody flying to Boracay for a week needs it.

Set against a $5 local SIM, none of this is cheap, and we still do not know what allowance that $5 includes. What the eSIM buys at Kalibo is not data at a better rate. It is a working phone during a two-hour transfer, and the ten minutes you would otherwise spend at a desk with your passport out.
