Bergen — the coverage story starts when you leave town

In the city, no problem

Bergen has good coverage where visitors spend their time. Bryggen, the UNESCO-listed wooden wharf, has excellent signal. The Fløibanen funicular runs up to Fløyen and there is coverage at the top, so the viewpoint photograph goes out immediately.

If your whole trip is Bergen — the wharf, the fish market, the museums, a couple of days of rain — you can stop reading and buy the smallest plan that covers your stay.

The part that actually matters

Bergen is the gateway to Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, and the Norway in a Nutshell route — Bergen to Flåm, Gudvangen, Voss and back — is the most-booked tourist experience in the country. It passes through areas with zero to intermittent coverage.

That is a property of the terrain, not of your provider. Fjords are deep, steep-sided and thinly populated; there is no plan sold anywhere that puts a signal into the bottom of one. On the deep fjord sections of a boat tour, expect to be disconnected.

The practical consequence is that data size is the wrong thing to optimise. A large plan does not help on a day you cannot use it. What helps is what you loaded the night before.

What to download before you board

Four things, on hotel wifi, the evening before:

• Offline maps covering the whole fjord route, not just the towns.
• The weather forecast. Yr.no is the one Norwegians use and it matters here, because fjord weather decides whether the day is worth doing.
• Your Norway in a Nutshell booking confirmation, saved so it opens without a connection.
• The Fjord Tours app, which works offline for an itinerary you have already booked.

The last point is worth pausing on: your itinerary does not depend on being online once it is booked. The failure mode is not being unreachable, it is arriving at a connection point unable to open the ticket.

What to buy

Prices are national. Airalo's Lofotel plans, read from its own site on 13 August 2026:

A week around Bergen and the fjords rarely needs more than 5 GB, precisely because so much of the sightseeing happens out of coverage. The 50 GB plan is the cheapest gigabyte in Norway and the right choice for a long stay, but it is the wrong choice for a fjord week — you would be paying for capacity the landscape prevents you using.

Unlimited plans are the same trap in a more expensive form. Airalo's verified unlimited is $18.50 for five days and $27 for seven; Holafly lists $19 for five days on indicative pricing. Both are fine products and neither improves a boat ride through Nærøyfjord.

No provider publishes a confirmed host network for Norway. No provider publishes an unconfirmed one either: Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly all name nothing, and the Telenor and Telia pairing this page used to carry against Holafly came from our own data. Since the gaps here are geographic rather than operator-specific, that is less consequential than it sounds — no Norwegian network covers the deep fjord sections either.

And the usual caveat
