Linz: quick 5G, a thin airport counter, and one package trap

Start by checking whether you should buy anything

Austria is in the EU. If your phone contract is an EU or EEA one, roaming in Linz is included at your normal domestic rate and the right amount to spend is nothing at all. The rest of this page is for visitors from outside that arrangement — most UK contracts that dropped EU roaming, and travellers from outside Europe.

The network is better than the city's reputation suggests

Linz is an industrial and technology city rather than a tourist one, and the mobile network reflects where the money is. Average 4G speed here is around 52 Mbps against an Austrian national average of 48 Mbps. Where 5G is live it reaches roughly 320 Mbps, and Linz is one of only four Austrian cities with 5G running, alongside Vienna, Graz and Salzburg.

There are no dead zones in Linz worth naming. A1 and Magenta both perform well inside the city and there is no local reason to prefer one over the other. A1's national advantage is rural and alpine valley coverage, which only becomes relevant once you drive out of Upper Austria into the countryside.

This is the one thing on this page that will actually save you money. Airalo sells two Austria packages — Servus Austria and Servus Austria+ — and the + version charges more for identical data.

All ten prices were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. Unless you have a specific reason to want the + package, the plain one gives you the same allowance for less — and the gap is widest exactly where most visitors buy, at 5GB and 10GB.

Saily lists 1GB for seven days at $1.99, which is the cheapest Austria plan we hold, and we have now checked it on Saily's own site. Holafly's unlimited Austria plan is a verified $20.50 for five days, and it names no host network. This page used to say $19 across A1, Magenta and Drei; neither figure came from Holafly. In a city with no coverage problem and 5G at 320 Mbps, paying that instead of $8 for a verified 5GB month is difficult to justify.

Buying a physical SIM here is the awkward part

Linz Airport (LNZ) has limited carrier presence. Our data notes an A1 desk there but nothing about its opening hours, and we would not build an arrival around it. If you fly into Vienna, buy there and take the train — which is how most people reach Linz anyway.

In the city itself there is an A1 store in the centre. Magenta and Drei both sell prepaid nationwide, but the shop locations we hold for Linz cover A1 only; if you specifically want one of the others, sort it out in Vienna rather than hunting once you arrive.

A passport is required for registration wherever you buy. That is Austrian law, not shop policy. Airport tourist packages in Austria run around $15, against $8 for a verified 5GB eSIM you can install before takeoff, so the counter is buying you convenience and nothing else.

Festival weeks, and the app to install

Two periods fill the city: the Ars Electronica Festival in September, which brings an international digital-art and technology crowd into a compact centre, and the Christmas markets through December. We have no record of either degrading mobile service, and we would not tell you to buy extra data for them.

For getting around, install LINZ AG Linien for the trams and buses. Google Maps covers everything else. Neither needs much data — a week of maps and messaging fits inside 1GB comfortably.
