Getting online in Graz — where the honest advice is not to overbuy

Graz is the easy one

There is no coverage problem in Graz. Austria's second city has strong 4G and 5G across the centre and the suburbs, and no dead zones that a visitor will encounter. Anyone telling you to buy something special for Graz is selling you something.

What Graz does have is an advantage the numbers do not obviously show: it is undervisited relative to Vienna and Salzburg, so there is less congestion on the same masts. The practical effect is that the same eSIM often feels quicker here than it does queuing for the Schönbrunn ticket office.

The numbers

Average 4G speed in Graz is about 50 Mbps, a touch above the Austrian national average of 48 Mbps. Where 5G is available it runs to around 300 Mbps — Graz is one of the four Austrian cities with live 5G, alongside Vienna, Linz and Salzburg.

Both A1 and Magenta Telekom perform well here; there is no meaningful reason to prefer one over the other inside the city. A1's advantage nationally is rural and alpine coverage, which only starts to matter if you are driving out into Styria's valleys, where the narrow deep ones can drop signal.

Before you buy: check whether you need to

Austria is in the EU. If your phone is on an EU or EEA plan, roaming here is included at your normal domestic rate and you should buy nothing.

For everyone else, Graz needs very little. Saily's 1GB for seven days at $1.99 is enough for a weekend of maps, messaging and photographs. Airalo's verified Servus Austria package gives 5GB over 30 days for $8, which comfortably covers a week that also takes in Vienna or Salzburg. Buying 20GB for a city break in Graz is money thrown away.

Where to buy locally

If you would rather have a physical SIM, there is an A1 store in the Graz city centre. Graz Airport has an A1 counter with short queues — a genuine advantage over Vienna Airport at peak times — and a passport is required for registration, as it is everywhere in Austria.

Airport pricing is the usual story: expect around $15 for a tourist package, against $8 for a verified 5GB eSIM you can install before you fly. The counter is convenient, not cheap.

Magenta Telekom and Drei both sell prepaid across Austria and either would work fine in Graz, but the shop locations we hold for this city cover A1 only. If you want one of the others, the reliable move is to buy in Vienna, where all three have centre stores, rather than to go hunting once you arrive.

Apps, and the festival calendar

Install Holding Graz for the city's trams and buses; the network is compact and the app handles tickets. Google Maps covers the rest.

Graz has two festival peaks worth knowing about. Styriarte runs across June and July and the Diagonale film festival lands in March. Both bring cultural visitors into the centre. Neither has a noticeable effect on connectivity — the city's capacity absorbs them, which is not something you can say about every Austrian festival town.
