Mobile coverage in the High Tatras: good in the resorts, gone on the ridges

Where the signal stops

The High Tatras split cleanly into two zones. In the resort towns — Tatranska Lomnica, Strbske Pleso and the settlements along the electric railway — 4G is good, averaging around 22 Mbps. That is slower than the Slovak national average of about 40 Mbps, but fine for maps, messaging and booking a cable car.

Go up and it changes fast. The cable car summits do have coverage on Slovak Telekom. Above roughly 1,800 m on foot, signal is weak to absent, and above 2,000 m on the ridges you should plan for none. Remote trails through the Tatra wilderness are dead ground, and Rysy summit at 2,499 m, on the border itself, is weak at best.

The practical consequence: your data plan is a valley tool. On the hill, what matters is what you downloaded before you left the hotel.

The border ridge

The Slovak High Tatras share their main ridge with the Polish Tatras, and coverage follows each country's infrastructure. Depending on which side of the ridge you are standing on, your phone may attach to a Slovak or a Polish network. Slovak Telekom and its Polish counterpart are both T-Mobile-branded, and both countries are in the EU, so this rarely causes a billing surprise for European SIMs.

It matters more if you are carrying a single-country travel eSIM. A Slovakia-only plan gives you no data while your handset is camped on a Polish cell. If your route crosses the ridge — Rysy is the obvious case — look at a regional Europe plan rather than a Slovakia one. We do not list regional prices here, so check them with the provider.

Which network, if you are choosing

Slovak Telekom, trading as T-Mobile SK, has the widest coverage including mountain and rural areas, and it is the network we would want in the Tatras specifically. Orange Slovakia is strong in the cities and competitive on 5G, and it is the network most travel eSIMs ride here. O2 Slovakia is the third option.

For a valley-based trip any of them is fine. For anything above the tree line, Slovak Telekom is the one with mountain coverage on its side.

What to buy before you arrive

Poprad-Tatry (TAT) is the closest airport and it has no SIM counters at all. That single fact settles most of this: install an eSIM before you fly, or buy in a city if you are travelling overland. There are T-Mobile partner shops in the resort towns, so a local SIM is obtainable once you are there, but you will spend your first hours offline getting one. A Slovak SIM costs about $9 and a passport is required to register it.

An earlier version of this table listed Nomad's 10 GB month at $14 and marked it indicative; the price was never read off Nomad's site and it was wrong, and the real figure is $16, level with Airalo's. Slovakia is in the EU, so if your phone plan is issued elsewhere in the EU or EEA you should be able to use your home allowance at domestic rates and buy nothing at all. Season notes

Ski season runs December to March, hiking season June to September. Mountain thunderstorms are common in July and August, which is the strongest argument on this page for preparing offline: download the forecast and your route before a summit hike, because the ridge is exactly where you will not be able to refresh either.
