Buying a SIM card at Bratislava M. R. Štefánik (BTS)

A newsstand, and the shortest queue we have recorded

Bratislava's Milan Rastislav Štefánik airport sells SIM cards through a newsstand in arrivals, carrying Slovak Telekom and Orange. There is no operator-run store and nothing sold as an eSIM.

The wait is about 5 minutes at peak and roughly 2 minutes off-peak — the shortest of any airport on this site. BTS is a small airport and it shows in the numbers.

What we do not hold: the name of the newsstand, its position in the terminal, or its opening hours. A small airport with few late movements is exactly the sort of place where a single retail unit closes between flight waves, so do not treat it as guaranteed.

The passport rule

Slovakia requires a passport or national ID to register a prepaid SIM. That is national law, not a shop policy, and it applies in Bratislava city stores too. It also means the five-minute queue figure is the wait to be served, not the length of the transaction.

Free wi-fi runs across the terminal, so an eSIM can be activated and a ride into town arranged without buying anything.

Many visitors to Slovakia never land at BTS

This is the part that makes Bratislava different from every other airport page here. Vienna Airport is about 60km away, across the Austrian border, and a large share of people travelling to Bratislava arrive there instead.

If that is you, the newsstand at BTS is irrelevant and, more importantly, a Slovakia-only eSIM is the wrong product. Country plans cover the country they are sold for — a Slovak eSIM gives you nothing on the Austrian side, which is where you will be landing, clearing customs and finding a bus. If your route runs through Vienna, buy a plan that covers both countries, or accept being offline until you cross.

Both countries are in the EU, which brings up the other point worth making early: if your everyday SIM is from any EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home applies in Slovakia and Austria alike. Check your fair-use roaming cap and buy nothing at all.

What data costs in Slovakia

A Slovak prepaid SIM runs around $9 at airport prices. That is a fair price and puts the newsstand roughly level with a mid-size eSIM plan, though we do not know the allowance in the pack it sells.

Read the last row first. Fifty gigabytes with 30 days of validity is $36 — $0.72 per gigabyte, and by a distance the cheapest data in the country. It is verified, read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. The 1GB plans that look like the bargain are $4 a gigabyte, five and a half times the rate.

If your trip is longer than a couple of days, or you are working from Bratislava rather than sightseeing, that bottom row is the purchase. An earlier version of this table carried Nomad's 10GB month at $14 as an unconfirmed listing; the real price is $16, level with Airalo, and Nomad's win here is at 20GB instead.

Which network you get

Holafly's own Slovak listing names no carrier. The T-Mobile SK and Orange pairing this page used to show came from our own data rather than from the seller, so do not choose on that basis. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly publish no host network for Slovakia at all — Airalo's Slovak product carries the retail name Dobrý deň, which is a label, not a carrier.

The newsstand is the one route where you know the network, since it sells Slovak Telekom and Orange SIMs directly. Slovak Telekom, Orange Slovakia and O2 Slovakia all have city stores if you would rather choose properly than take what a newsagent has left.

The verdict

Install an eSIM before you fly, and buy the 50GB tier unless the trip is very short — the per-gigabyte gap is the biggest saving on this page. BTS is one of the least painful airports to buy at if you skip that step, but a five-minute queue is not worth the price difference. Full country pricing is on the Slovakia hub.
