Bratislava: a compact city with a border 60km away
Bratislava's own coverage is unremarkable in the good sense — the Old Town holds up fine, even on a busy weekend. What makes the city different is that half its visitors arrive from Vienna, and a Slovakia-only plan stops at the border.

The city itself is easy
Bratislava's Old Town is compact and walkable: the castle, the Main Square (Hlavné námestie) and the Danube riverside all sit within about a kilometre of each other. The network holds well, including on the Friday-to-Sunday crush when the Old Town pubs and restaurants fill with Western European weekenders. We hold no evidence of a coverage quirk here worth planning around, and would rather say that than manufacture one.
So the interesting question in Bratislava is not coverage. It is which country your plan is for.
Vienna is 60km away, and that matters
Bratislava sits 60km from Vienna, linked by express coach — Flixbus and RegioJet — and in summer by hydrofoil ferry on the Danube with Slovak Lines. A large share of people who spend a night here also spend one there, and plenty do Bratislava as a day trip out of Vienna.
That crossing breaks a country-specific eSIM. A Slovakia plan gives you nothing in Austria and an Austria plan gives you nothing here. If your trip touches both, the sensible buy is a regional Europe plan rather than either country's own — we do not hold regional pricing in the data behind this page, so compare it yourself, but the principle is worth ten minutes before you pay twice.
And first, check whether you need to buy at all. Both countries are in the EU, so an EU or EEA contract roams across both on your domestic allowance under roam-like-at-home rules. If that is you, the border is a non-event.
Buying in town, and the passport rule
Slovakia requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, so this is not a grab-and-go purchase the way Hungary next door is. Budget a counter visit rather than a newsagent transaction.
The practical address is Obchodná Street, where both Slovak Telekom and Orange have stores. Bratislava Airport has newsstand SIM options, but the selection is limited — if you are flying in and want a local SIM, the city shops are the better bet, and our figure for a Slovak airport SIM is around $9. Orange Slovakia, Slovak Telekom and O2 Slovakia are the three carriers here.
For rides, Bolt is the app. The Old Town is small enough that you will mostly walk.
What the eSIMs cost
Slovakia is one of the better-priced markets in this part of Europe. Verified Airalo rows below were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026 and the Nomad row from Nomad's on 17 August 2026; the rest are indicative figures we have not confirmed.
| Plan | Price | Per GB | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saily, 1 GB / 7 days | $3.99 | $3.99 | verified |
| Airalo, 5 GB / 7 days | $9.50 | $1.90 | verified |
| Airalo, 10 GB / 30 days | $16 | $1.60 | verified |
| Airalo, 20 GB / 30 days | $24 | $1.20 | verified |
| Nomad, 20 GB / 30 days | $20 | $1 | verified |
| Airalo, 50 GB / 30 days | $36 | $0.72 | verified |
Read to the last row before deciding. Airalo's 50 GB month at $36 is $0.72 a gigabyte, the cheapest rate we hold for Slovakia, and it costs $12 more than its own 20 GB month for 30 GB more data. For a weekend, though, that is beside the point: 3 to 5 GB covers maps, Bolt and messaging, and Airalo's verified 5 GB at $9.50 for seven days is the obvious size. There is also an unlimited 3-day plan at $11.50, verified, which suits a Friday-to-Sunday trip where you would rather not watch a meter.
Worth noting if you are comparing across the border: Slovakia's mid-size rows undercut Hungary's on the same provider, so a Vienna–Bratislava–Budapest run is not a market where the prices are interchangeable.
Ignore the network claims
Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Slovakia; "Dobrý deň" is the name on Airalo's checkout page, a retail product rather than a carrier. Nor does Holafly: the T-Mobile SK and Orange pairing this page used to credit to its listing came from our own data rather than from the seller, so there is no provider claim here to pick one over another on. In a city this well covered, nothing about your choice should hinge on it.
Full provider pricing is on the Slovakia hub.
Common questions
Will a Slovakia eSIM work on a day trip to Vienna?
No. A country-specific Slovakia plan covers Slovakia only. If your trip includes Vienna — 60km away by Flixbus, RegioJet or the summer hydrofoil — compare a regional Europe plan instead of buying two country plans. EU and EEA contracts roam across both countries free under roam-like-at-home.
Where can I buy a SIM card in central Bratislava?
Slovak Telekom and Orange both have stores on Obchodná Street, a short walk from the Old Town. Bring your passport — Slovakia requires ID to register a prepaid SIM. Bratislava Airport sells SIMs at newsstands but the selection is limited.
How much data do I need for a weekend in Bratislava?
3 to 5 GB is plenty for a compact, walkable city. Airalo's verified 5 GB plan is $9.50 for seven days, or there is a verified unlimited 3-day plan at $11.50 if you would rather not count.
