Schiphol (AMS): a single KPN counter, no ID needed, and a 22:00 cut-off

What is in arrivals

One carrier sells SIMs at Schiphol: KPN. Odido and Vodafone Netherlands, the other two Dutch operators, are not on the arrivals floor, so there is no comparison to make in the terminal.

The KPN counter closes at 22:00. Schiphol is a 24-hour hub with long-haul arrivals well past that, and this is the constraint that catches people out: land at 23:30 from Singapore or Atlanta and the desk is dark.

When it is open, the queue is about ten minutes at peak and three off-peak. Unusually for Europe, no ID is required — the Netherlands does not register prepaid SIMs, so the sale is a straight over-the-counter transaction. That is why a Dutch queue moves faster than an Austrian or Danish one, where every purchase includes a passport scan.

What you want data for at Schiphol is immediate: train tickets and departure boards at Schiphol Plaza, ride-hailing, maps. Free WiFi covers the airport and is enough to buy an eSIM standing in the concourse if you arrive without one.

Should you buy anything?

Most people, no. The Netherlands is in the European Union, so roam-like-at-home applies and any EU or EEA SIM works here on your domestic allowance at domestic prices. Schiphol's European feeder traffic — and its Norwegian and Icelandic arrivals, both EEA — walks straight past the counter.

UK travellers should check their own operator before assuming, because British networks took different positions on EU roaming after Brexit and several reintroduced charges. Schiphol's long-haul arrivals from the Americas, Asia and Africa are the ones who need to decide something, and they are also the ones most likely to land after the counter has shut.

What it costs, and where the ladder actually ends

A prepaid starter pack at a Dutch airport typically runs about $18 — the dearest of the four northern European markets we price. Against that:

The Airalo rows were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026 and the Saily rows from Saily's on 16 August 2026; both are verified. Hé Hé is Airalo's retail name for the Dutch package, not a carrier. The pairing is not a coincidence — Saily prices itself exactly one cent under Airalo at all three shared sizes, which is a genuine undercut worth precisely one cent.

The number that matters is the last one on the ladder rather than the first. Fifty gigabytes over 30 days at $36 is $0.72 a gigabyte — the Dutch market does not stop somewhere north of a euro a gig, it runs down to well under a dollar if you buy in size. The same $18 that buys one airport starter pack buys 10 GB as an eSIM, or half a 50 GB plan.

Unlimited is worth a look here because two providers price it closely. Airalo's verified unlimited runs $11.50 for three days, $27 for seven and $69 for 30. Holafly's indicative unlimited runs $11.70, $27.30 and $74.90 for the same durations — a few cents apart at the short end, dearer at the month, and unlike Airalo's, not a price we have checked at the till.

Networks: who says what

This is the one country in this group where more than one provider publishes something, though none of it is confirmed.

eSIMCard lists KPN and Odido. Holafly lists nothing. This page used to give it Vodafone Netherlands, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. In both cases that is the provider's own listing and we have not independently verified either, so treat them as leads rather than facts. Airalo, as everywhere, publishes no host network at all — and nor do Saily or Nomad, whose sites we read on 16 and 17 August 2026 and which name no operator in any country.

If you are choosing a plan because of which Dutch network it uses, understand that you are trusting a marketing page. The practical answer for a Randstad city trip is that it rarely matters; all three Dutch operators cover the built-up west of the country.

The verdict

EU or EEA SIM: do nothing. Long-haul arrival: install an eSIM before you fly, because it is live at the gate, costs less per gigabyte than the counter at every size we can price, and does not care that KPN's desk shut ninety minutes before you landed.
